Until housing prices continue to fall to more reasonable levels, it's just not feasible for a good number of people to become homeowners.
The only houses that are truly affordable for a lot of people are the houses that need a good deal of work done to make them livable. And face it, if you're buying a house, you're going to be too broke to live somewhere else while you spend time and money fixing the house you just bought. Or you could always go the route we just did...
We just bought a mobile home in Spring City. Yeah yeah, trailer trash blah blah. It's not so bad, believe it or not.$48k for the house,$5k down with 8.5% interest rate for a ready-to-move-in house with over 1100 square feet of livable space? I think it's pretty do-able. And the interest rate is only so "high" because it is a mobile home. The downside to our situation is that we're stuck renting the land. Total cost per month is less than we were paying for rent, however, plus our sewage, water, and trash and snow removal are included.
If traditional homes had been more affordable, we surely would've gone that route. But it just wasn't possible for us, unless we wanted to never go grocery shopping or pay for gas or any of our utilities...
