Opinion: 'The Help' needs help depicting realities of civil rights South

There are 3 comments on the The Times of Trenton story from Aug 29, 2011, titled Opinion: 'The Help' needs help depicting realities of civil rights South. In it, The Times of Trenton reports that:

As a black parent and an educator, I'm at a loss to explain how a movie that takes place in Mississippi during the civil rights era and has been both saluted and widely viewed could be so short of better references to the extreme violence that white Mississippians effected upon their black neighbors for decades.

Believe me, it is just a movie. It is not meant for anything other than that. If you read the book, it does give a little better picture of the 50's and the tragic ervents of the time.
The author took one subject only, the mistreatment of household "help" and present the cruel picture of how they were treated. If she had covered all the ill actions of neighbor to neighbor in the movie or book it would have been 40,000 pages or longer.

Nothing is "just" a movie. The media is hugely important, and films depicting white people 'saving' black people is unacceptable in this day and age.(Especially considering the racist comments of the director, it's safe to say that there was some bias involved.)

I agree that the book did a much better version.

The author and director have gone on record saying they set out to make a FICTIONAL work that focused on the relationship of the "Help". At no point in the book, the movie or any interviews did they claim to be telling a historically accurate biopic of how things were in the time. Sssooo I'd say if you don't agree with it, don't watch it or read it.
