What happened? Seems like only yesterday city leaders were putting up signs, buying property, cutting ribbons, holding photo op`s and news conferences and now I read that the developer of the project has been indicted on 6 counts of federal bribery, 1 count of conspiracy, 11 counts of mail and wire fraud, 4 counts of money laundering, and 1 count of conspiracy. It seems that 4 elected state officials have been implicated also. Does anyone know whats going on with this? Is the Phenixian going to happen? Anybody have any news?

Didn't I reaad somewhere that the project was on the shelf after J.W. Brannen's downtown redevelopment group was dissolved by Jimmy Wetzel's city council? Then the Wetzel hired Brannen for economic development for the city with the money that the city got from the redevlopment group when it was dissolved. Talk about some funny dealings. Wetzel blasts Brannen in a council meeting and then hires him. I think the property now belongs to the city and is for sale or maybe for giving away to another developer.

No, you are in fact wrong. Wetzel was trying to uncover where the corruption was coming from but this ploy was unsuccessful.
They were trying to figure out who was using the city's money and why but it was too thoroughly cover up.

When it comes to corruption, Wetzel is in the know.

In October of 2008 it seems as though the Russell County Commission voted to move forward on an agreement with Chattahoochee Entertainment LLC and Ronnie Gilley Properties for the building of a so-called sports complex to include electronic bingo, dinning facilities and other attractions. The county attorney along with J.W. Brannen painted a pretty picture as to the jobs and money this grand project was going to bring to Russell Co.
Does anyone know where this agreement stands now that Mr.Gilley and others may be going to jail? Is the Phenixian downtown redevelopment thing still on?

Gilley Properties like others in the past real estate boom climate failed to have their feet solidly on the ground when making big plans. Their bingo enterprise in Dothan has been closed or severely hampered. They do not have deep pockets. Just about all the press from them has 1/3 devoted to the Nashville "names" that are backing it or may be your neighbor.

To my knowledge they have not developed condos except on the Florida coast and know little about redevelopment sites inland.
Finally, they tricked local government into selling them land cheap by promising to develop a golf course--which they never did.
If I was one of them I would be embarassed to show my face in public around these parts.

From the looks of the of the October 28th. Russell Co. Commission Minutes it seems that the county officials were all for it. Read it! Does`nt look as though it took much to get them on board.

We don't need gambling to come back to this town. Ask anyone whose been around here 50 years or more and they will tell you why.

Ive been around here for well over 50 yrs. Also been to Native American Casinos, Nevada, Costa Rica, Europe, Mideast and Mediterranean countries that allow gambling. Matter of fact...Just got back from Central America where we did a few nice casinos during a fishing trip. Giving people enough freedom to choose doesn't seem to be a problem in these places. They seem to be doing really well. Keep in mind they don't allow the local crooks to run the show nor do they allow the industry to regulate itself.

If you've been to the native American casinos, you are in fact Support a few crooks making the majority of the money, tossing a few crumbs to their fellow native Americans. They're just Native American crooks.

Native American Crooks? Id say it`s about time someone threw us a few crumbs. We didn't even get crumbs when our ancestors were rounded-up and our land was stolen.

So, a few months down the line, what's up with all this? Did it all simply go belly-up like some many dozens of ideas announced in these parts over the years?

EARTH to NATIVE...Are you out there Major Tom? Have you been out looking for WMD or something?
After the Russell Co. Commission gave Mr.Gilley and Chattahoochee Entertainment the keys to the county, something strange happened on the way to the forum. The whole thing wound-up in a Big Alabama Wama Jama! According to news sources and an apparent statement from Mr. Gilley who plead guilty to (6) counts of bribery and (4) counts of money laundering, it looks as if he was about $160 million in debt.
Dont take my word for it. Read it for yourself. Just Google Ronnie Gilley/ Chattahoochee Entertainment LLC / J.W. Braggin / Ken Thundercrook / Phenixian / Russell Co.
While your at it...Google the Russell Co.Com mission Minutes for Oct.28th 2008 and read that crock full of dung.

Okay, then I suppose it won't be happening after all...
