Anybody know what the status of this Corp.is ? Last info was they are, or were, a private not for profit with Sammy Howard as Chairman. Seems they may have had ties with a planning or consulting firm out of Atlanta at one time. Anybody got any info on the status of this organization?

They are probably not active anymore as a group. The city of Phenix City formed an official downtown redevelopment group a couple of years ago that covers essentially the same geographical area. The group coordinated the efforts of The Boulevard Group out of Atlanta which is a consulting group that the City hired to do a downtown redevelopment plan. One of te core elements of that plan was the creation of a downtown campus for CVCC and Troy University. The latter has had a groundbreaking ceremony and will be under construction near the end of the year. The Phenix Plaza shopping center is being vacated and is expected to be redeveloped as was in the plan but Aronov Company of Montgomery, the owner, is keeping their plans close hold. The remainder of the plan has been overtaken by events with a Courtyard by Marriott hotel to begin construction soon adjacent to the Troy campus on the riverfront, the city's offices vacating most of downtown for the old Cobb Hospital property and selling off existing properties for commercial redevelopment, and relocation of the county's offices to the old Mead Coated Board headquarters. Another thing that will impact the area is the announcement of a major riverfront development about 1/2 mile south of the Dillingham Street Bridge that will include two high rise hotels, a condominium complex, a full service marina, a whitewater pullout point, boat storage facilities and about 1/2 mile of waterfront retail development including numerous restaurants. Additional retail will be set up in two of the old brickyard buildings.

Big plans that sound good for the city. Great news!
