First of all I am not related anyone on here that I am mentioning and am going to be honest!

Football first!

Butch Joplin was the best Footback Coach Phelps ever had, He would have been there Longer if Brian O'brien would not have roosted him out.

Gano Stilner has the heart of a Volunteer and has always been top notch.

Marty Casey Was always a big help with Phelps.

Skip Reynolds was Butch's Assistant and was great!

Ark=Arkansa was always a big help.

Brian O'brein though is poop did not stink and dated Kelly Bently a student that was not right and he was a bum of a coach!
I was there in 1986 when Rick Adams had a vote as whom to keep, Butch or Brian.. Brian was in the office and Rick was taking the vote so no one had the balls to stand up and say we want BUTCH! If one person would have said anything like I did then they did not get to play much at all!

Rick Adams thought he was a Musscle beach Stud but he was a impotent Pimple Buster! He was a terrible non educated coach.

Carrie Fannin, Simply was a good football player! He sucked as a coach and he thought his poop did not stink either. He was not productive and did not play the best person but rather the person who's family had the most money or the biggest mines.

Bill Fish Hook McKinney was a decent man and had his heart in the right place.

Baseball!

Ronnie Preece was the best and Mr. Young.

Andy Dotson was a good one until Paul Charles made him a puppet on a string so that little Michael Ray would get honorable mention.
Well they are no where now! Goes to show you!

Basketball!

Mr Cunningham, Ron Preece were good folks! They had honest hearts.

Gary Hunt only wanted attention and wanted to meet with the girls in study hall.. truth is the truth. ask many!

JR. Vanhoose is a JOKE! He wants the Boys Coaching Job and has already spoken to me about wanting to get in at Pikeville Highschool, Belfry or Pike Central for a bigger more better job. So he has his foot in the door now but he has another agenda.

Debbie Stiltner was ok, she played whom she like best and many times did not care who was the best to win a game but to whom was the most income earned family.

I speak the truth and the truth hurts!

I was actually there when a Black Man "Butch Joplin was voted on and we were not permitted a private vote" It was done so in the open with no hands raised......

If it had went to a Private Vote that student dating cigerette smelling breath of Obrien would have never coached. He sucked and stunk! Rick adams was the same way! A flunky with Pimples.

Butch Joplin did not have his Master at the time and from Phelps he went to Pikeville where his son excelled! Phelps had a 10-0 season then bring in OBrien! That was foolish!

Andy you should have kept to whom was best instead of Paul Charles setting there pulling your strings as to little Micheal Ray play Marbles!

Many good players were looked over because of some of the coaches decisions to play the more rich or better off.

Ron Preece, Butch Joplin, Jack Cunningham were not like this! They loved sports and played to win no matter who was up to bat.

JMO

Tell Mike Charles to get out of coaching he is a has been, Tell JR. Vanhoose he is still pissed cause UK did not want Mr. Kentucky and he had to go to Marshall! He could not hang with the Wildcats and Marshall didnt have much recruiting skills.

JR said he was going pro many time. Overseas does not mean the NBA JR. Get over yourself dude!

Hope you get the job at Pikeville or Pike Central.
Your wife lies all the time and yall need to take break-cation!

See Ya!

sounds to me like you were a self-centered little brat who thought they were a jack of all trades but a master of nothing! Must hurt to get passed over by so many times - by so many people. Problem is you want to list everyone else's faults but I see none of yours listed! But your secret is safe and I'm sure no one will even notice that. Let me guess, maybe you were good enough to be drafted by the NFL, NBA, & NLB but the poor little thing could not get a break because he had such mean coaches who just never noticed what God given talent you had. So you never got looked at by any schools and had to go on to become.....what? An egoistical old prune who has nothing better to do than sit behind a computer and type. Great job... I can see the light now and you rank right up there with the best of them. Sounds like all of topix really needs to give you a hand and congratulate you on a job well done. Yeah, right!!!!! Hope this stroked your ego alittle for you (Maybe now you won't cry baby so much) and by the way- Like you said "The Truth Hurts"!!!!!!!!!!

Let's get some fact straight about Rick Adams. I have known Rick for quite some time. I will give you an update. Rick said he was never given a choice about assistant coaches. He was simply called up and asked if he was interested in coaching football at Phelps. Bryan and Rick grew up together and were best friends. John O'Brien was his coach in high school. He had no problem with Butch. But Butch had some other issues to deal with. He always wanted to coach with Bryan. They were a good tandem in high school when Bryan was a quarterback and Rick a receiver. They are as close as brothers.

Rick will be the first to tell you he was inexperienced. He considered Bryan as a co-head coach. They did go 5-3 that year. The only game Rick said he would like to have back was the Wheelwright game. He said they blew that one. Worse was his girlfriend was from Wheelwright at the time.

Rick went back to college and got another degree and ended up at Washington County. He was an assistant coach for several years there and still coaches middle school football. He says football there is really serious. Washington County has a strong tradition in football. A couple of his players played for U of L. He was pretty good with quarterbacks and wide receivers and if you remember, Phelps had a pretty potent passing game when he was here. He still says Pete Maynard could have played for any high school in the state and Bobby Mullins threw the ball pretty well, but joked he couldn't outrun Andy Lester who was the center. He also mentioned Darrell Bentley was as good as athlete to this day he has been around and could have punted in college. He also thought highly of Mike Fannin and Buddy Charles. He loves Ron Preece and James Hurley and still sings their praises.

He also was an assistant girl's basketball coach at Washington County where two of the teams he coached went to the quarterfinals TWICE in the state tournament. One of his players played at UK I believe. He was an assistant baseball coach with some good teams there as well. He really would like to be a head basketball coach someday. Football he loves, but only as a position coach.

Rick is now about fifty years old. He still is in good shape and runs a lot and lifts some weights. You know how he liked to run. He told me he has run a sub three hour marathon in Chicago and qualified for the Boston Marathon. He doesn't deny he liked a good party, but he is now married to a lovely woman, has a stepdaughter and two grandchildren. He said he wasn't a good teacher when he started but he worked hard to become one when he came to Washington County. Not to say he doesn't like a good beer or bourbon and coke. He lives in bourbon making country. He loves horseracing and owns a thoroughbred. His best friend in Washington County is a horse trainer who worked with Dominican and Sedgefield, both of which ran in the Kentucky Derby a couple of years ago. He apparently is a good handicapper too. Like anyone else, there are things he wished he would have done differently. But when one door closes another one opens. We all have had issues one time or another. He obviously loved it Phelps. He loves his players and would have been content at Phelps. He still speaks fondly of it and said those were good days.

i agree with what you said about vanhoose. he doesnt care about phelps girls at all !. you can deffinatley tell they havent been worked with. and he's the one who plays his "picks"

but i dont agree with what you said about debbie. i personally think she is a great coach, and when i played for her when i was younger, you had to earn your spot and she put you where you needed to go.

I played under for Butch, Gaino, Mike Vanhoose, for the 99-00 season. Let me tell you about Butch. When Butch has the boys to run his offense (Billy Peck, Chris Hurley, Luke Mccoy...etc...) Then he wanted to win. We went 8-2 that year. Now the following year. When he didin't have the boys to run his system. He could care less If he won or not. He just wanted to get the season over with.

Gaino is a great coach as so is Mike etc...they wanted to see teh best players play but, how can you with parents, drugs, and politics run the show? Intill somebody steps up and and play the BEST not the buddy system then Phelps and other area schools will have some success. Look at Belfry 2 state titles...hmmm think about it.

i played sports at phs from 87-91. this is what i seen. coaches flirting with girls, way over the line, and coaches playing favorites. the football coach once called a fake punt on 4 and 14 on our 37 yd line. needless to say we didn't get it.some of those teams had talent but no motavation to play. the basketball coach wss a dud, he only keeps the job because no one else wants it. he's dirty and most people know it. no one stays at a school that long and wins one district title. my experience at sports encouraged me not to push my child into them. i practiced as hard as i could but no one noticed, however i was asked to get my family to make a donation to the team. we didnt and i didn't play. sometimes the hard work doesn't pay off, i enjoyed my buddies though and had alot of laughs. when i see those coaches today i wonder how they feel when thier kids get crapped on.

just to throw this out there, Tyler Jones has coached last year and now is looking 4 a coaching job. From what have heard he knows what he is talking about. He helped the middle school out at Matewan and he has rich tradition in his family about the sport. Dad played 4 McCoy and Yogi from 74-79, his uncle was on Butches undefeated team at Phelps in 74- or 75 i really dont know. Tyler himself played 4 Yogi 05-09 and started center 4 him, undefeated his senior year, so if there looking 4 a coach and wants someone that knows what hes talking about then i suggest you look him up.

someone said Jeff Peters is considering a return to the coaching ranks. could you imagine if we could land peters? We would be the shit if somehow we could convince peters who averaged 2.3 pts. per game and 1.5 rebounds per game at Pikeville College over his 7 years.

I don't know him is this Raymond Jones son? if what you say is correct he should be a good coach of fundamentals. McCoy was at Phelps from fall of 76' thru 80' I think. Yogi was there from fall of 78' thru fall fall of 81 i believe.

Was that good coaches or good parents? Think about that! Today it doesn't matter if their kid SUCKS-you BY GOD better play them or they'll be at the board on you or on this nasty assed website talking smack about you. It takes a total idiot to deal with the idiot parents in phelps or anywhere else in the county. I agree, it was better back in the day but those days are long gone.
