KERRVILLE The former Camp LaJunta counselor accused of sexually abusing a boy there in 2009 was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday for violating the terms of probation granted in May.
Matthew S. Bovee, 22, was initially charged with indecency and aggravated sexual assault of a child, but as jurors deliberated at his trial he struck a plea deal and pled guilty to injury of a child in exchange for a sentence of 10 years probation.
The boy, now 11, had testified that Bovee fondled him as he emerged from a shower at the camp in Hunt.
In August, prosecutors moved to revoke the probation of Bovee, of Austin, for allegedly violating numerous conditions and requirements.
Under a new deal struck Friday, Bovee pled true to violating his probation terms and was sentenced to nine years in prison on the injury to a child charge, according to court officials.

From Kerrville Daily Times:
Former camp counselor gets 9 years in prison
Matthew S. Bovee, a 22-year-old Lincoln, Neb. man and former Camp La Junta counselor who pleaded guilty to injuring a child by sexually abusing a camper, received a nine-year prison sentence Friday for violating the terms of his probation.
He pleaded guilty Thursday to several probation violations and received nine years in prison as part of a plea agreement. The maximum sentence he could have received was 10 years in prison.
I think when the defense saw the stack of evidence against him, he just folded like a stack of cards, said 198th assistant district attorney Brad McCullouch of the plea bargain.
Defense attorney Joe Gonzales declined to comment about the case.
(The sentence) should send a message that the 198th District Attorneys Office will not put up with sex offenders, McCullouch said.
Bovee, as part of a different plea agreement in May, was sentenced to 10 years probation, with sex offender conditions that required him to register as a sex offender as long as he is on probation.
He admitted in May to injuring a child by sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy during a shower check at a camp session at La Junta in July 2009.
He was arrested Aug. 16 for allegations that he violated several terms of his probation.
Among probation violations he admitted to were failing to remain in Travis County, where his probation was transferred and becoming delinquent in paying his July and August probation fees.
He also did not submit to required electronic monitoring in July. He used a computer at a public library, which did not have a probation monitoring software installed, and he had an active Facebook account from May through June both without prior approval of the 198th probation department and the court.
The court did not prosecute allegations that Bovee lived within 500 feet of a school, or that he had possession of a firearm, which is illegal for convicted felons.
The possession charge still is pending in a Williamson County court.
