A day at the range with irresponsible, unfriendly shooters and others can go a long way toward changing (eliminating) hoplophobia. Crazy.
But that's what happens after people who have access to the newsmedia write and publish insane lies. Like this one:
"A gun in your home is more likely to be used to kill one of the occupants rather than an intruder."
If you're stupid enough to believe that then yes you'll become a hoplophobe.
