Many Northern Michigan workers are having to give notice to their employers - "Schedule me for 8 hours or I just can't afford to work"

Part-timer workers are facing a serious "Between a hard and a hard place" cash crunch. First at work, because of the economy, their employers are cutting back hours. Then at home, the decision comes down to this. Can they afford to pay $3.36 a gallon for gas, drive to work, work 4 hours pay taxes, daycare and then drive home.

Many laborers in the Petoskey Michigan area drive at least 30 miles in to work everyday. "You can't work and live in Petoskey." Said one employee at a local retail store. "Rents too high around here. I had to move 35 miles away just to be able to afford my rent. Now, I can't afford the gas to get into town."

One young man has already made the decision to take a pay cut and to work closer to home. "At these gas prices, I'm saving money taking a $1.00 and hour pay cut and working closer to home."

Another young woman didn't seem so optimistic. "I've tried to get a job closer to home. Everybody's cutting back hours or bringing in people to work from other countries. It's not fair. I'm just going to have to cut back on a lot of things." When asked what she'd cut back on, the young lady replied, "I've already cut out a lot of driving into town. If I don't have 3 good reasons to go, I stay home. I don't visit family as often; I call them instead. I guess I'm just going to have to buy cheaper food and stay home a lot more. I would give up my car, but how would I get o work?"

Have the Gas Prices affected your outlook on your present living or job situation?

"As Michigan Turns"...
Regular Gas was reported to be up to $3.62 in the UP today. Assuming a person makes 7.00 an hour, uses a gallon of gas to get to work, a gallon of gas to get home, after paying taxes, and insurance (assuming there is $0 daycare or retirement funding) how many hours does a person have to work in one shift to make a buck?

Using a gallon of gas to get to work - 3.62
Using a gallon of gas to get home - 3.62
Paying taxes in Michigan - 40+%
Buying a gallon of milk ...priceless.

Why should Jenny the Democrat Governor care if you quit buying milk to buy gas to get to work? You don't pay a 6% sales tax on Milk.
