Individual American Indians and Alaska Natives and their businesses pay federal income tax just like every other American.

We send money to sovereign nations the world over. Not that I like it, but is this really that different? At least it benefits people here instead of thousands of miles away

Your Question: Why are we sending money to these Indian reservations?

The Inconvenient Truth: Our forefathers screwed the Indian. then they obligated future generations (us) to right the wrongs with monetary compensation with few restrictions.

Don't get mad at the Indians.

Why are we sending money to these Indian reservations? It's their choice, either remain a sovereign nation or assimilate into American society. If they elect to stay a sovereign nation, they should have their own economy, constitution, government and infrastructures. But if you elect to use our social services, government courts, highways, natural resources and other services, you must abide by the same rules as all other Americans. It's that easy. After all, it's the 21st century. Lets finally move on people.

Yes, don't get mad, it's basically foreign aid being that it is a sovereign nation. So if you want to complain about it, why not mention a few other nations you don't wish to help out with your tax dollars. Anybody know the top ten list of nations receiving the most foreign aid in the last decade?

It's the one area of the nation the federal government cannot get its greedy mitts on. By offering up their fed funny money, they slowly invite themselves into Indian country. It's sad the Indians could not get their acts together to have some semblance of a courts system of their own that was complete with adequate protections for their women. Now, they'll lose ever more of their sovereign status in the name of convenient white man's monopoly money. Since when does it take money to make sure you treat the women of your community fairly? And why must it come at the expense of deferring to the greedy Federal government?

Another example of "safety" that will ultimately end in loss of freedoms, just like every other fed initiative.

You guys are idiots. They pay federal taxes, just like the citizens of Minnesota, and are eligible for federal funds and grants, just like the state of Minnesota.

Those individual business do not begin to pay in what is used. Do the reservations pay taxes on their casino profits? Don't the Indians on reservations with casino's already get a paycheck each month from the casino? How long do we have to keep paying for things that happened two hundred years ago? GET OVER IT!!! they have totally used more of our federal resources. You have your unwed mothers, unwed fathers, and children who don't have parents to pay for them, then you have all the welfare-medical they suck up, and how much money has been spent trying to rehab these people. I would like to know how many are in prison....all paid for by the white-mans dollars...GROW UP!

Wow - what a racist rant. You have statistical facts to back up what your saying? Very few tribes pay members a check each month. Most casino profits are spent on tribal government operations and programs. Casino profits are federally taxable and are paid, that's a fact. Tribal governments have just as much right to federal funds as the state do as they are federal tax paying entities and individuals.

It's the least we can for them considering all the land we stole from them. Ya don't just kick a group of people off some land just because you want it. They were here before us and this was their land.

The people of MN shouldn't even HAVE this land - we killed almost all of them until they had to surrender. Not a good way to do business. And the reason we paid them so much money is because when we took the land from them initially, we promised we would pay them a certain amount - but we never paid that amount. We paid them MUCH less. Sounds like something a terrorist would do - take over a land, killing it's people and then kick them out and give them way less than what you said you'd give them. Real nice.

"Racist".....yeah, as I read through these posts, I knew that would be inserted somewhere. The post you objected to would only be racist to someone who has been brainwashed to believe that anything said in public view that does not coddle any non-white population is "racist"....it is this kind of twaddle that increases, not decreases, racial tension. No one likes baseless accusations thrown in their faces. That will only generate resentment.

That's not true. They did not own this land just because they were on it first. The historic reality is that they were a primitive people occupying parts of this land. Did the settlers do everything right and always apply justice? No. But then, the Indians were no saints either. In any case, don't live in the illusion that we somehow don't belong here.

According to the Indian, they didn't own the land, they just used it, for nothing.
