It's just keeps getting worse-
More than 300 people gathered at Maymont today to remember the two black bears killed Thursday after one of them bit a 4-year-old boy.
The event lost its way early on when some people shouted out questions, demanding to know why the bears, ages 9 and 12, were euthanized so quickly and why they were buried at a landfill and not on park grounds. A Maymont official quickly broke up the question-and-answer session.
"This is where they grew up," said Bob Cruickshanks, a Northside resident. "They should have been buried here. That's totally ridiculous-they handled it like they were stray animals or something." Julia Dixon, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, said the carcasses needed to be disposed of quickly and "could have potentially carried a disease."
The bears remains were dumped at a landfill!
your comment about the bears remains left in a landfill thatis even crueler i am an animal lover of all kinds except when it comes to the endangerment of a child yes i think the parents should be charged with wreckless and child endangerment.

Maymont employees are mourning the death of the park's two black bears. The animals were sedated and given a lethal injection around midday after Maymont officials met behind closed doors for nearly three hours with representatives from the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
A 4 yr old child and at least 1 parent were apparently at the rear of the 2-acre bear exhibit Saturday when the child climbed a 4-foot wooden fence into a restricted area and approached the 10-foot chain-link fence that surrounds the bears. One of the bears bit the 4-year-old boy last weekend. Both bears, ages 12 and 9, were euthanized because it was not known which one bit the boy.
What are you thoughts?
My 5 year old and I just visited Maymont in the spring on a class trip and have so many pictures of those two bears. I cannot tell him about the murders of these bears...it is so barbaric..it made me sick to read about it..I hope the little boy is ok, but I have to blame his parent(s) for this..they should have supervised him better. Because of their negligence these bears were killed, and that just breaks my heart.

Termination of the Bears was really a poor decision on the Part of the Park and the State officials.

It is absurd that these Bears were killed, a kid puts his arm in the bear cage....gets bitten... it is not the bears fault, it's a Bear. I wonder if that Mom lets her kid wander around the kitchen with Pots on a hot stove.

Did someone explain 'the rules' to these bears beforehand? No, they just killed them. Both. For the actions of one?!? For the actions of an animal?!? Because of the negligent actions of two dipsh!t parents who shouldn't have reproduced to begin with?!? That at least one of the parties involved should have been able to read and comply with the sign bothers me. That the bears were punished for parental stupidity bothers me even more. That people who can't comprehend that wild animals are dangerous can reproduce bothers me the most.

This has got to be the cruelest & worse event I have ever heard of. I BLAME the Fish & Wildlife Dept for making a very "RASH" decision to cover their "butts" & I blame the parents of that child even MORE. Child Protection should be called in to find out why the parents are so irresponsible for the death of two "innocent bears". This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE by everyone involved. Why is the name of the parents "being protected" to start with. There is MORE to this story then we have heard. UNREAL!
the innocent bear had to die also which is horrible. its the parents who should have been watching the kid and this wouldnt have happened.

You are strange...attempting to converse with bears. Better get a butt shot....your wife is suffering from that fungus you brought home. Put a condom on your tongue the next time.
