Ok, when we bought this house last year I found out quickly that the guy across the street and I had gone to school together..mind you we moved here to get away and it's 4 towns away from where I grew up.
The first few months were ok, he would just drive by, wave or stop for a minute to say hi..well then his wife and he separated/divorced. He ended up with the house...for 4 months every freakin day he text me asking me what is for dinner and if I don't answer him he is on my porch at 6pm every night on his way home from work. Now don't me get me wrong, I've invited him some times, but this every night shit is getting real old. He told my husband last night that he was just going to start having me make out a menu on Sundays for him so he'd know what day of the week he needed to hurry home or go to a drive thru...hubby just kind of shrugged it off but it pissed him off. So anyway, tonight I'm in the computer room, the door bell rings and I don't answer it knowing that its him and he can't see me LOL...I look out the window and the dicksmack is in my garden getting tomatoes, sweet corn and a watermelon!!! After he leaves and goes home he sends me a PM on FB asking me if I have any meat or anything to go with the stuff he just took!!!!!!!!! Dudes got some begonias now!! Do I be a bitch and tell him off or just sit him down and talk to him about the fact that I'm feeling a little used here..would be different if he would just once offer on his way home to stop and pick us all up some take out or maybe buy some steaks to grill or something...friend or not this shit is getting old!!

Okay. Here we go!! LOL!! The guy has some boundary issues for sure. You are going to be stuck with him for some time if chooses to stay in that house and bad neighbors can really lower your quality of life. Either you or your husband have to assert yourselves. Try to not be aggressive but direct. Men hear differently than women sometimes. It might be an idea for your husband to lay out the boundaries in a non confrontational way. I would suggest that you have NO meals with him until he develops boundaries and maybe never again. If you avoid, it could create tension and things can get even weirder.

This guy could have been very dependent on his wife and is transferring it to you and your husband. Let him know that the best thing he can do for himself is to get on his feet. Not necessarily in those words but that's the gist of it.

Personally, I would have answered the front door holding my .45. Then I would have told him, that while he is/was a friend, I am not his keeper and if I catch him stealing out of my garden one more time, he will be in need of medical assistance !!
That being said, tell him he is no longer allowed to just invite himself over. You have a family and he is not your responsibility to take care of. Your family time is precious to you and outside interferences are causing a strain. Why you may feel sorry for him, there is a reason the wife is no longer there and he needz to learn boundries.
I feel for you, I had to do something similiar about a week ago. A "friend " kept showing up and texting, wanting to know what I had harvested from garden and how many eggs I had, and could she "HAVE " some. At first I was nice, but then I point blank told her, that we were not her personal grocery store. We planted a garden and raise chickens to supplement our family, not hers. If she wants these items then plant a garden or go to grocery. So then she starts bugging our niece that is staying with us on college break, asking her to bring her stuff. Needless to say I blew a fuse at the freeloader.
It is all about the boundries and they have been crossed !

I don't need my husband to defend anything for me LOL I think that's pretty obvious...I had my talk with the neighbor and told him how I felt, he now has a better understanding on things, it won't happen again.

Belle E Flopp, you have the same badges and Yellow Lollipop, curious how do you all get those?

It's a game on some Topix forums . You earn points and gain badges . There is quite a few other forums that sponsor the game . Have you ever been to Offbeat?

There is a whole creepy world out there . LOL !

Maxi, some of the forums around the country let you earn points for reading different things within that community's forum. You earn the badges for different things including collecting the most points for the week on that forum to become the "champ".

Wow. Just wow.

I would have camly tried to talk to him on the level. Keeping it polite, but clear and to the point.

Which you seem to have done.

But if this continues, someone needs to clearly set a new tone with him and worry more about being clear and less polite.
