Is anyone interested in signing a petition to send to the Mayor asking him to 'tone down' Auburn's police? Everyone wants good security in their town. But the APD is chasing alot of people - and business - from the town. Auburn has a reputation for hotdog policemen all the way to Lincoln. What good is it for our city leaders to try to promote Auburn as a place to shop and visit and play AND start a business, when the police keep scaring people from coming? People in Auburn KNOW the local police are a problem and it has gone on for a long time. You cannot go out after a week of hard work to enjoy a drink, attend a party or gathering, a sporting event or ANYTHING without being pulled over. If you happen to be out toward midnight, you'll get pulled over - regardless of your age. Young turks are hired from out of town and they come to Auburn to cut their police-teeth by harassing the local townspeople. I've heard people talk about this problem for years; why don't we bring our concerns to the mayor? He oversees the Police Department. And what percentage of Auburn's budget stems from all these superfluous tickets? Is THAT why Auburn is known far and wide as a place to avoid - because the City depends on the revenue generated? It does absolutely NO good for Auburn money to be spent on economic development, tourism, and other venues to make Auburn a destination, when the police are scaring people from coming - in droves. This isn't Washington DC - this is small town mid-America. Most of us live here because we desire a slower, friendlier pace w/o all the regulations and b.s. that are found in urban areas. This isn't to say people should be allowed to drink to excess and get in their vehicle without any fear of being caught. We've all seen other vehicles on the road at one time or another that was swerving and we wished they would be stopped. But that isn't how Auburn works - our police camp outside a place of business, such as the bowling alley, the bars - just about anywhere people are gathering - and randomly pull over cars, evidently hoping to 'get lucky' and be able to ticket someone. Do they receive commission for each ticket they write? And why has the Major allowed this to go on for so long? Auburn cops are one more reason for people to leave Auburn, or never bother coming back - or perhaps not come at all. The next time you're asked to vote for another Economic Development proposal, or fund yet one more attempt to draw industry, shoppers, vacationers, etc, to Nemaha County - remember the same hand that's asking you for more money has control over that aspect of town that is working fulltime against those very same efforts. If you're interested in having a petition drawn to sign, speak out, please. Police are supposed to be public servants, officers of the peace. Auburn police to no match that description at all and I wonder if it isn't time to speak out - loudly. Please share your thoughts.

If they are sitting outside the bars waiting I doubt they have to get lucky. Everybody thinks they are ok to drive after a few. It's the other guy that ain't. Cops doing their jobs, now that is something to bitch about. You must be one of the drunks. Public servant is one thing. Kissing your ass ia another.

I was brought up, that if you are not breaking the law, do not worry about what the police are doing. I am an Auburn transplant, but have always noticed that the Auburn Police Department does a great job fighting crime.

That mentality of 'if you don't have anything to hide, you don't have to fear' is plain stupid. I imagine that's how other societies were taken over by their governments or entities which did not result in a democratic republic. When will you draw the line for your privacy? When you're being strip-searched? Think this is far-fetched? Look around the world at all the oppression of regular citizens. I support good law enforcement & have studied that field in the past. That's not what we have in Auburn. Law Abiding Citizen - giving free reign to the authorities because you have nothing to hide leads directly to the loss of your - and my - personal rights. It's happening every single day. This isn't what America used to be. Wasn't it Jefferson who said protecting liberty required a well-read populace? When have people or entities in power ever NOT abused their power when left to do as they please? Liberty is for the sake of liberty.

I have friends and co-workers who have had things stolen & broken in to. They have even told the police who did it and sometimes even where the stolen items are, but nothing has been done by our law enforcement. It sure looks like when it comes to REAL crime fighting Auburn & Nemaha County is lacking. If you’re drinking, speeding, failing to use a turn signal, not stopping within the required distance from a stop sign watch out, if you’re stealing, doing drugs, meth, dumping garbage, fighting dogs, no worries. The priorities of local law enforcement sure appear way out of whack.

Hockeymaster you are from Peru. Why do you care about the police in Auburn? Is it the sheriff's department or the state patrol? And if you live in Peru, you have nemaha county plates.....what did you do and get caught at? I agree....abide by the rules and you don't have to worry.

How about somebody start writing some tickets for the wide load vehicles that SPEED through town all the time. WTF? Why can these big trucks hauling god only knows what and everything else come though town, hog up the road, tear up the road and not be charged a damn dime? I VOTE more police patrol on those things and less on us people coming home from the southside

So your pissed they are doing their job by pulling over people that have broken the law by drinking and driving???? You say it's ok to have just a couple and then drive, well how the hell are they going to know that you only had a couple??? Seriously, I've lived here my whole live and I can't even remember the last time I was pulled over, Oh wait, I do remember, about 7 years ago....I WAS SPEEDING..I BROKE THE LAW..see how that works! You break the law, you pay! How F'n hard is that to understand? Do you really think cops are out to get people just for the heck of it? I've NEVER been harassed and I rarely and I mean rarely hear anyone out in the community bitch and moan that the cops are just out to get people, no the only ones that are doing the bitching are the ones sitting their ass behind a computer with obviously nothing better to do.

I have been stopped by the APD for having the wrong-colored turn signals, even though they're the ones that that were installed at the factory. I was also pulled over in Auburn by a Sheriff for absolutely no other reason than he wanted to see who was driving the car. Draw your own conclusions.

There was even a break-in in progress, the dispatcher’s response “sorry we are on another call and will be there later.” The other call was not an accident or life threatening, again according to the dispatcher, while someone was breaking into a place where the call was coming from. If it was me I would have filled the SOB with lead and then called back,‘don’t hurry the SOB is dead now take your time.’ Someone breaking into my house where my family is, just like what happened, I’m not sure I will even call 911 especially after what happened in this case.

Yes,they do like to harrass people instead of worry over a little turn signle maybe they need to worry about the real problems like cleaning up the drug problem
