Perryville school board votes to transfer two disgruntled football coaches? Two great classroom teachers, with solid evaluations, are going to be teaching alternative school? After the school board voted to get rid of the Alternative School? Why, because the football staff couldn't get along and NO one wanted to work with the head football coach? What is going on?

Would this action not be a "conflict of interest" if one of the board members is a member of the coaching staff? The program has struggled for years and will continue do so if everyone is not on the "same page." The program didn't have coaching problems until this year...hmmmm?

In closing, can school personnel be transfered if they are tenured and/or have had good classroom evaluations? Lawsuits can be expensive ... and who pays for those costs? You and I...that's who!!

This is extremely interesting. I was not aware there were any problems. Is the head football coach causing issues?

Sounds like someone (school board or administration) needs to make a formal statement to clear up any misconceptions the public may have before it becomes an even bigger issue with faculty, staff, community, alumni, coaches, parents, players, etc. That makes too much sense though!

Ooops! Sounds like someone is going to have to resign either their board position or coaching position -- or both! It appears no one thought this one out before taking swift, questionable and possibly unethical action!

Since when does sports or athletics come before academics? Someone has some explaining to do on this one if both staff did indeed have good to outstanding evaluations.

This makes one wonder who came up with the questionable "transfer" idea -- the board or administration? Academics before athletics or athletics before academics at PHS?

Another "black eye" for PHS?

Easy now! I'm sure the school will be making some type of statement to the public about adding new coaches while they are in a "budget crunch."

PHS needs to get rid of Winkler. He does not know how to run a good football program, and makes the players not want to play. All the sayno players that I have talked to have said that he is nothing but a prick and no one likes him. I still dont understand y phs gave him the postition in the first place. Jim B is who should be the head coach, not some fat smartass who thinks he is something big.

Why have there been so many different head coaches and so many bad teams at PHS for the last ten years? Don't blame the coach if its a talent or attitude problem. If winkler could win seventy percent of the games in his ten years at SV, why should'nt he have the same success at PHS?

From someone on the outside looking in, it seems to me that a lot of PHS problem is a lack of continuity in the coaching staff. The head coach never seems to last more than a couple of years. His style and methods never get a chance to really set in. Young players play a couple of years for a coach and the next thing you know, there is a new coach with new ideas they have to get use to.

If you look at the more successful HS programs in the area, most have had a head coach and assistants who have been there for at least a decent number of years. That give ssistants the desire to stay around longer also.

Getting boy interested about the High School program in grade school is also very important. That means more than just playing pee wee rec ball. Back in the 80's, I could always be sure of 1 thing playing Perryville, they would hit very hard and not just lay down. I hope they can turn it around can get more wins in the future.

P.S.
Another thing I think is unfortunate is the talent that never comes out for football (or other sports). There are quite a few kids that could be very good athletes. Many of those kids have parents who don't care or don't want to bother with the time involved. Some kids take the wrong fork in the road in middle school or Jr High and get in to trouble and never exposed to the game. In doing so, they are never exposed to discipline, teamwork or guidance from an adult. Sad but true.

I agree with Maleman67 about lack of continuity in the coaching staff. I went to high school in IL and we got a new head football coach my freshman year. The first thing he noticed is that there was no youth football league and no emphasis on weight lifting. He helped implement both programs right away. The first 4 years of his tenure his coaching record was 10-26 but the school district stuck with him. After 26 years of coaching football, he retired with a 190-87 record, 19 playoff appearances and two state championships. He also had 3 of his players go on to the NFL. He was inducted into the IHSA hall of fame in 2005.

Class 1 vs. Class 4 - like comparing oranges and apples as the old saying goes.

Whole new ballgame here for the new coach.
Better athletes, better coaching, better facilities, knowledgable and intolerant fans/boosters.

Sounds as if two good teachers were railroaded and now the district will pay for two new coaches, oops, teachers in addition to the "transferred" teachers. Please, give the common person a little more credit for what the hell is really going on!

Athletics vs. Academics won't last too long once the smoke or should one say the smokescreen is punctured!

Could someone please tell us what really did happen at the board meeting on the 14th? Otherwise, people will continue to draw their own conclusions, assumptions and fabrications of what really did happen with the transfer of the two teachers -- which is not good for the school, staff, administration and board members.

This sounds like a story that the local or area media needs to take a look at as this would be local news worth checking into. Have new coaches been hired and what about $$ to pay for two new positions? How about board members being parents of football players and voting on "transfer" of teachers with good to excellent evaluations? How about a board member being a coach and parent of a player and voting on transfer of two football coaches -- conflict of interest? Sounds like a start for the local media .
