Oh, Holy loaf! Monks' Bread evolves in new economy

Since 1953 the Trappist Monks at the Abbey of the Genesee have been making Monks' Bread.

Article a bit misleading. There were more than 30 monks last week, they do accept donations to the abbey, they only bake 3 days a week, and you can visit the neautiful abbey and buy their products i their store. They also have products from other abbeys like jams and jellies.

Thanks "Visitor" for your comments and support of the Abbey of the Genesee! I am the General Business Manager at the Abbey, a role now needed in the complex and intensively competitive and regulated food industry. I was there when Pat McGonigle from Channel 10 did the story. Maybe I can clarify a few things.

* There are not 30 monks--just under. That was just a reference number which when rounded is accurate. One brother left just last week to become a Carthusian.

* Pat's comment on donations was the result of our explaining to him the difference between mendicant monks who rely exclusively on begging/ charity to survive and the monks who live under the Rule of St. Benedict who must live by the work of their hands. I assure you we can accept donations--always welcome--but the monks cannot live by donations. Monks' Bread (and cakes) is a necessary industry spiritually and financially.

* Yes, the bread is baked every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and sold fresh that day in our Abbey store and in every major local grocery store in western and central New York, northern PA, and even in a few stores in Vermont and Connecticut. We also have a franchise bakery since 1988 on the Gulf Coast of Florida (Tampa, St. Pete, Sarasota, Bradenton)with bread sold in Publix.

Thanks for visiting our store! We do sell jams, spreads, candies, and other products made by other monasteries from across the USA. Mmm good :)

The Abbey of the Genesee is one of the wonders of this area. I visit often, though not Catholic. It is the most peaceful place I can think of. And their bread is wonderful - I use it to make cheese puffs, our family's all-time favorite appetizer

The wall came down here in Berlin -thanks God- and You can buy nearly every product of the world now - helas, but not Monk´s bread yet.
