My family experienced a house fire a number of years ago. It is devasating, even when no one is hurt. Immediately, concerned people could determine where the family is being housed temporarily (e.g., hotel) and bring care packages to them. Actual items are appreciated (such as toiletries, clothes, coats, gloves, toys for kids, BLANKETS), as are gift cards so immediate purchases of shoes, clothing, underwear, etc. can be made. Within a couple weeks, the family will need to find temporary housing in which to reside while their house is being rebuilt. Anyone in the neighborhood who could offer temporary housing, such as a rental home, could work with the family to set up an arrangement with the insurance company to rent a home to the family. Staying in the neighborhood near friends is priceless for children at a time like this. During the coming months, the family will struggle with the extreme inconvenience of the insurance claim as well as the battles with contractors to ensure a fair outcome. Any babysitting or time-type donations (e.g., an accountant to help with the receipts being submitted to the insurance company) would likely be most appreciated. Cash and gift card donations are very helpful, in that it's not typical for a family to ever fully recover financially from such a devastating ordeal. It's hard to remember everything that needs to be claimed, or one's policy is not quite what it should have been. Either way, it's a recovery process that lasts a very long time. A community that pulls together to help these people could make a HUGE difference!

A fundraiser is being held at Desanti's near Brick Bodies in Perry Hall 1/11/10 to help this family. I believe it is in the evening.
