Have you ever had the privilege of dealing with zoning boards? They generally do not act out of the interest of the people, but their own agenda of power. Now that is acting like a 2 year old!!
This is not a temper tantrum but a mode of bringing the issue to the forefront. What you may not realize is that these 'planning boards' cost their citizens alot of money as they must pay everytime they attempt to improve their property. It is counterintuitive as improvements help eveyone in raising the value of real estate, remember they were going to rebuild with a newer building.
We had a similar experience in 1999. My husband and I went to sell our property that had a preexisting deck. Never was the deck mentioned when we purchased the property. When we went to sell it, we had to get everyone's signature in the neighborhood stating the deck was okay with them and then go to a zoning meeting. It cost us a few hundred dollars that went into the township's pockets. When we were at the meeting,we were not the only people in this situation. By the end of the night, the township collected over a thousand dollars. Keep in mind, the deck was built prior to our buying the house and the township did not have a problem at that point.
Again, this is a tactic to draw attention to how the township zoning boards dictate their power to the little people.
so the prev owners of yours and your neighbors houses built decks w/out permits and when you bought the property your home inspector dropped the ball and didn't check for permits. township didnt screw you the prev owners who passed it to you did.

Ok all, I live in Perkasie and I know the "businessman" in question. For all of you curious folks out there, neither of them are even remotely gay. Not that it should matter if they were...goes to show you what you people focus on. Anyway, regardless of what anyone thinks, they are getting the attention they wanted. So they win.

If they needed a zoning relief to build twins, wait until they attempt to convert it to apartments. I hope they did thier homework to see if that use is permitted there or they will be in the same boat again.

Actually you are incorrect. When real estate is sold a C.O. has to be generated by the township. It was the township's duty to identify the new deck prior to issuing the C.O. The township has a copy of the survey and the makes them the authority on the construction of the house in regards to additions. Although the prior owner had a duty, so did the township as they were aware of any permits that were or were not issued and the original condition of the house. This is all too common.

The problem is that in many towns the zoning board overuses its power. The sad thing is that they damage the reputations of their towns which they are supposed to protect. Now who in their right mind will go to Perkasie to build or remodel knowing that the board may not allow such improvements?
Seems like the zoning ordinances were already in place when they bought the house---if they didn't know, they should have.

Not all townships or boroughs issue a C.O. for resales, the one I live and work in does not require C.O.'s for resale, just new construction.

More and more local Zoning boards and town councils are abusing their positions and disregarding the rights of property owners (not to mention total disregard for the US Constitution). So KUDOS to the pink and purple house. I think some lawn decoratons like pink flamingos are needed, too.

You guys ROCK!!!! If you buy property, you should be able to build or tear down anything you want. Unless, the Borough Counsil is paying your property tax they shouldn't have a say as to what you build on YOUR land. It sucks you guys couldn't build the house or houses that you wanted, but for what it's worth I love that you decided to stick it to the local government with a pink and purple house (it's exactly what I would've done) you guys are awesome!
