Town Resident

Susan J. Smith has served this town for over three decades and now would like to run for the vacant seat on the Board of Assessors. She may have the experience, but does she have what we want in a town official?

Susan J. Smith returned a call to me, a resident of the town. Before I could address everything that I had originally called to ask her, Ms. Smith terminated the call by hanging up on me.

The reason I had called was to ask when the Board of Assessors had reviewed an appeal letter addressed to them by a fellow town resident. Ms. Smith told me that the Board had not reviewed the appeal and that she was the one that had looked it over. The letter was addressed to the Board asking them to reconsider aide for a disabled veteran. Ms. Smith, instead of the board decided what would happen to the appeal. Should she have been the one to make the final judgment or should it have gone to before the Board? Why have a Board if decisions can be made unilaterally by the Assistant Assessor?

This next thing might seem trivial to some, but when Ms. Smith responded to the appeal she addressed this resident by the wrong name. Not once but twice, once on the envelope and once in the letter. So the excuse of a typo can not be used. To me this shows the lack of concern and care of what this disabled veteran was asking for in the appeal. She couldn’t even get his name correct.

Does anyone else have any similar experiences or any experiences that would make me feel better about her joining the Board of Assessors (it seems like she is going to be running unopposed.)
