"North Middlesex Superintendent of Schools Maureen Marshall said yesterday that Gerald Martin, the district's business manager, has submitted his retirement papers."

Yet, Mr. Martin has been named a finalist for the finance director position in the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District. When is a retirement NOT a retirement?

Interesting to note that Mr. Martin is negotiating a contract for a position with a targeted salary range between $95K to $105K. Mr. Martin's current salary per his North Middlesex contract: over $130K, in addition to benefits.(His 2010-2011 contract would have had Mr. Martin earning a salary of over $136K.)

With two NMRSD principals leaving, along with the high school headmaster, an open requisition for a high school English teacher, and now the district's Business Manager announcing a retirement (which is not really a retirement), there seems to be an effort to "abandon the ship." Maybe the superintendent is steering this ship on the wrong course?

The 50-year-old structure requires so many repairs and classroom and lab upgrades that the New England Association of Schools & Colleges Commission on Public Secondary Schools has placed the high school on warning for reaccreditation.

So
1. Let's see a list of all the alleged problems and needed upgrades and have licensed building inspectors and technology consultants (think wireless) review them. I read of the previous inspection and felt only the architect (forget his name) had any credibility.
2. For the legitimate concerns, get repair estimates from licensed contractors.
3. Itemize separately new equipment purchases which would be incurred regardless of building solution.

Our high school is under-capacity, so classroom space is not an issue, those class size may be. Fifty years old is NOT old for a building.

We are NOT Lunenburg's collateral. Lunenburg does not own or control us.

Clermont is correct. Ask town voters first if there is any interest in a mega-merger before spending half a million to study something not in our kids best interest

"The absence of Martin's expertise in calculating the financial impact of the potential merger will create a problem with..."

Hardy ha ha ha! That's a good one! He did such a good job calculating the financial impact of closing the Peter Fitz in Pepperell, remember?

The administrators are flocking away from Maureen Marshall almost as rapidly as the students are leaving the district.

All Marshall lies...

you can't retire in Mass and collect a pension and then go to work in the public sector.

years ago Marshall herself brought in engineers who said in a televised meeting the high school was structurally sound and that it's biggest problem was the ancient furnace, something she has leeched onto ever since.

what does "Lunenburg's collateral" even mean? they've made it clear over and over that they want no part of north middlesex. it's the msba - the organization that Marshall keeps changing her membership status on - I've left, I've retired, it's dormant, listed as superintendent of Quabbin only, I'm still on but not voting - that's insisting Lunenburg keep going back to NM because NM doesn't have enough students to qualify for the money for a big loan and Marshall has been touting how many students the district is losing ever since she couldn't keep her promise of being the queen of school choice. So now she's trapped. also can't overlook her role on the state regionalization committee, which she chaired for years and kept mum about while she did her little act about the governor "forcing" the marriage of NM and Quabbin.

Add to that the fact that there are suddenly specific dates for this merger, when just a week or so ago the NM school committee was only looking into the feasibility of a merger. interesting. when did that happen?

no doubt Marshall has people in Quabbin waiting to come to NM to fill in for all the people who are suddenly leaving the district. And what does it say about her as a leader that she seems surprised about all of these departures?

The town does not have the 500K for a feasibility study and the state is certainly not going to pick up any of the tab.

For 500K, you could update the labs and do the repairs necessary to maintain the building.

Let's see the list of problems. Let's get some estimates of how much they will cost to get fixed.
The voters are not going to fund a new high school when they one they have needs just needs maintenence.

You don't put your house on the market becuase it needs new paint.
so what

So what if the Association of New England Schools and Colleges has put North Middlesex on warning for reaccreditation? NM went to them and virtually begged to be put on warning so that they could have another threat to make parents think their kids were in jeopardy. The high school isn't on warning for ACADEMICS it's on warning because of windows in the roof and the furnace and Maureen Marshall's determination to build and new high school before she leaves this district.
Since Ed Reform went into effect NEASC has served no purpose except to come into school districts and scare them into building expensive new facilities.
As far as what the quality of your kids' education is concerned, check the DOE website. Tell NEASC to butt out, save the $30,000 it takes to have them come in and schmooze for a few days and scare parents with "accreditation" bull. There's not a college in the country that gives a darn about NEASC.

More Marshall scare tactics!!!

"Marshall intends to push the conversations along..."

All you really need to know what's (or who's) behind the school committee representatives (on a regional expansion subcommittee) spending valuable (but inevitably, wasted) time on this.

Note: Mr. Martin is negotiating the "Hours" he will work.
Meaning Groton Dumbstable is hiring a part time Business and Finance Manager for the $105,000 and who knows how many vacation days and Sick days etc. he'll negotiate, he had 25 plus accrual up to 60 days.
This new Superintendent doesn't seem to understand "NO NEW SPENDING" he'll spin this hire as a saving to the district, hiring a part time Business Manager, and he just hired back a full time principal for Florence Roche that was not needed. He's not off to a good start in a district that has no money to even fix the boiler at Prescott that crapped out, he's off spending more monies, very disappointing, and now a part time Business manage.

Hope J. Campanini keeps an eye on this new GDRSD guy, not impressive to say the least.

Why are you leaving so soon, Gerry? Don't you want to crunch the numbers for the Virtual New Regional School District with the new High School and increased salaries of administrators, and additional cost for busing and special education etc. etc.Don't worry, it will all be paid for and sustained with Virtual Tax Payer Dollars. Come on Gerry, don't you want to bring us into the cutting edge of school systems???

The guy's probably just tired of being Maureen's whipping boy and trying to create actual budgets in her virtual world. Now there will be absolutely no checks or balances left for the ggood doctor to deal with and no more annoying things like details for the school committee.

Why do we have to delay the potential merger just because Gerry is gone? Can't Maureen crunch the numbers? OK, Let's see here. She doesn't do budget and finance, she doesn't do curriculum, or building safety, so what does she do?

Good question. Too bad the school committee doesn't give her a performance evaluation.

Well, ripped off, maybe they could "cooperate" with their good friends over in Quabbin and use their evaluation of THEIR superintendent, thus saving wear and tear on our school committee members and making them available for important tasks such as not evaluating Dr Marshall themselves.

Hey, if your new superintendent doesn't work out, we'd be happy to give you a part time superintendent to go with the part time business manager.

If you need a new boiler or are having budget woes, maybe you should just add another town to your district. The state may force you to add Lunenberg or maybe NM, they need a new boiler at their High School.See if Tyngsboro wants to join you. It's a real cost saver we hear.

We do not want to merge with Lunenburg it will raise our tax rates and gain us nothing. The school comittee and Marshal have been spending a ton of money on this and it will never pass through the three towns. I am asking the people of Pepperell to write my name in on the ballot for school comittee it is time to take our schools back and work for the kids not just a Monday night club.
