Hey,
I am doing a project in school about racist school mascots. Why was your school named the chinks and are there any editorials or newsclippings as to why they changed it.

Racist mascots?
Though I don't buy that, I'll still take the time to answer your question.
Being known as Pekin Chinks wasn't considered racist at the time. Because Pekin was close in spelling to being Peking, and we were told Peking was our "sister" city, the nickname came about. None of us saw it as racist in any way. It's sad that some minds only look for the negative in everything.

During the 60's, Pekin was a great place to grow up. How many who grew up in Chicago can say that? I don't feel we were "backwards", but if that means having safe streets and appreciating good neighbors, maybe we were.
How many good memories of Chicago do you have? Please don't belittle ours of our hometown.
Thank you for replying and making my POINT!

I attended PCHS from 1965-1969. I recently was in Pekin. It hardly resembles the town that I grew up in. I will always have fond memories of my time as a Chink. How about the year that we played Spaulding to a 7 - 7 tie in football and shared 1st in the Mid-State Eight? I find it interesting that out of the blue, something will trigger a memory and take me back. I am saddened to see the way that number of deceased classmates is growing. I myself almost joined it in 9/03. I had emergency open heart surgery. I ended up with 5 by-passes. And recently I found out that I need cataract surgery. I am TOO young for all of this. I have not attended a reunion in quite a while. I am planning on attending our 40th reunion in 2009. It is nice to see that after all of these years, we are still Pekin Chinks.

Lots of Luck to you on doing this report!!!! I heard about this mascot last night and has ordered my daughter to do a report on the "chinks"!
I can belive folks in Pekin would think it is ok to have a mascot called " chinks" if the had the chance to call it anyother racist name they would. I have been there and was out by night fall!!!

I don't remember Champs. There was Watkins' grocery, Alexander's store, Kitchell's grocery, and A&W when I was growing up. Where was Champs?

FYI:
Normandale was named for J.Norman Shade. I think he may have ben mayor of Pekin at one time, but too much water has run under the bridge to be sure of it. It was a nice neighborhood to grow up in.
My best friends there were Joyce Autrey, Donna Sea,Kathie Ledgerwood, and Vicki VanHorn. Any of you still around?

The A&W was owned by a family named Champions hence the name for the A&W being called Champs.

It was across the street from Kitchelles (Jack & Noni) next to the Tavern.

I barely remember Watkins.

There is a big Federal prison across the street from Alexander’s now.

Saturday big movie day at the Empire and drug store on the corner.
