Are buyers being scared away from shopping on ebay by all the recent bad press of the past few months? The federal investigation of Bill Me Later and the purge of thousands of small sellers by ebay? Many sellers on the ebay discussion boards report declining sales. Is ebay's declining reputation impacting sales for sellers on ebay?

Ebay allowing Holocaust items to be listed on their site was one of the lowest things they've ever done. The apology and the pulling of the items came AFTER they got exposed by media. Were it not for having been caught with their hand in the cookie jar, ebay would still be allowing these horrendous items to be listed. There is a CURSE on the house of ebay, and the fall of the house of ebay is coming. Call it karma if you wish, or call it the SEC, the FTC, and various other Federal agencies taking a look into ebay if you wish. The investigation into Bill Me Later was only the beginning. Sellers, new and old, small and medium, there is a HUGE sign hanging above the front door to the house of ebay and it reads: ENTER THE HOUSE OF EBAY AT YOUR OWN RISK

A look at the ebay discussion board threads (especially Seller Central) on any given day is downright scary. Sellers getting purged en masse by ebay for little or no reason and the site itself rife with all sorts of complex problems for sellers.

I have been an ebayer since the beginning as both a seller and a buyer. Until recently had everything been fine and I have 100% positive feedback . All of a sudden this week I get an alert that my listings violate a software agreement. I have been selling some usb headsets and after selling about 10 of them I get shut down. What's funny is that there are other people on eBay selling the same thing except mine are $10 cheaper than others. Methinks there is another seller out there that was jealous because mine were selling faster.
Yes, a competitor taking you down. There seem to be different standards applied to different sellers involving feedback and DSR policies depending upon whether you are a big box high volume like Toys r Us or a small seller. This probably isn't legal, but ebay seems to think it has immunity and is invincible. It may be that nobody has reported the situation to the FTC to have them investigate. There very well may be things going on at ebay that are trade violations which are punishible by stiff fines

Ebay has also become one of the world's largest purveyors of smut.
Never hear the execs talk about their share of that market during conference calls and analyst days.

Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar (still 5% owner of ebay) appeared clueless about ebay's egregious actions towards samll buyers in a recent Huffington Post Hawaii blog article.

The general public, mainstream media, and government regulatory agencies continue to remain largely unaware of really bad things going on inside corporate ebay. These things include violations and breaches of user agreements with sellers, the purgings of thousands of small sellers, illegal holds placed on sellers' PayPal accounts, and more. I guess bringing attention to it must be a numbers game. If the FTC or a
Congresman or a Senator only get 10 letters or phone calls, it's
dismissed a disgruntled folks or quacks. If the number reaches 50 the
clerks in the office pay attention. If it reaches a few hundred the
Congressman or Senator or somebody important at the FTC pays attention
and some kind of investigation or action gets launched. The problem- and
I realized this 4 months ago when i first started- is that there are
not enough people doing what I have been doing on a consistent,
persistent basis. Whether it stems from a feeling of personal
powerlessness a la "it won't do any good nothing will happen" or whether
it stems from apathy or whether it stems from the fact that their "ox
hasn't been gored yet" the net result is the same. And ebay keeps
trodding along roughshod on the rights and dignity of people and
throwing them under the bus. It is my contention that it cannot continue
as it is forever. What's going on now is substantially worse that what
was starting to happen in 2008 and has continued unabated.

eBay definitely isn't as good as it once was.
Nonetheless I had to LOL that someone here blames the Holocaust.

Reading this thread it would seem that the reference was actually to ebay having allowed Holocaust souvenirs to be posted for sale on the site but then when the news media got wind of it, they yanked them and offered an "apology" to try to save face.

Ebay’s overall reputation with the general public is in serious decline. A company cannot engage in egregious actions towards its own sellers- including the purges of thousands of them in recent months- without experiencing a major negative publicity fallout.

Yeah, Mr Obvious, I'm so obviously an eBay shill; they actually pay me to accuse them of being a criminal organisation, knowingly and calculatingly and demonstrably facilitating massive auction fraud on the consumers of the world; why, they've ever given me my own cubicle to work out of in their San Jose bunker; that Johnny Ho's a smart one, isn't he, particularly with matters of technological innovation ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

The fundamental fraud by eBay on consumers is eBay's demonstrably false claim to have “sophisticated and proactive” systems in place to control shill bidding fraud. Clearly, eBay has no such systems in place, and such a claim is therefore a "false representation for the purpose of making a gain” and that is effectively criminal fraud on eBay users, a deliberate and outrageous deception on eBay’s great many trusting users, leading those users to believe that the warm woolly coats on their backs are safe when, in fact, eBay is leading them into the shearing shed where eBay’s wolves are laying in wait. Indeed, demonstrably, eBay has been tacitly aiding and abetting, and effectively encouraging such criminal wire fraud activity since the year dot, and more so since eBay’s Johnny Ho introduced the additional anonymity for bidding IDs in 2008, for no other reason than to further obscure the demonstrably endemic shill bidding fraud from which eBay profits handsomely, for example …

http://www.ecommercebytes.com/forums/vbulleti...

And it also says a lot about the laziness, or corruption, of the regulatory authorities that no action has been taken even to stop, let alone to prosecute eBay for, this demonstrable, ongoing, massive, wire fraud on consumers …

Nevertheless, eBay is an Equal Opportunity Fraudster

eBay merchants may think that eBay is biased in favour of buyers but that is only when it suits eBay’s purpose; it’s nigh impossible to keep a track of all the deviousness and unscrupulousness, or the criminal activity, of eBay Inc.; their unprincipled activities are so pervasive; one can only generalize and describe eBay as an “equal opportunity fraudster”: they themselves will defraud, or will tacitly, and explicitly (the Chicago lady), aid and abet others to defraud, whoever they can, whenever they can—as long as there is a gain in it for eBay. eBay is probably the most unscrupulous commercial entity on the planet; eBay is, demonstrably, the greatest calculated facilitator of the most massive, endemic, auction fraud on consumers that the world is ever likely to know and, doubtless, there will be a trickle down effect of like criminal activity to their other operations. Ultimately, anyone that does any form of business with eBay, or any of its subsidiaries, eg “PreyPal”, does so at their constant peril …

eBay Inc, where the incompetent mingle with the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ...
