Good night, hybrid. Rest well.

Wow. Arias' mother says Jodi has "mental problems." No doubt the one from Mr. Arias will eventually air too. Wonder if we will see complete unedited interrogations of them?

Video source from HLN so give it as much or as little credence as you please.

From The Burning Bed to Jodi Arias: The Abuse Defense Gone Wrong

Excerpt:

Most crimes of domestic abuse and stalking are perpetrated by men, but just because the majority of victims are women, to deny that women can be controlling and abusive and stalk and kill the men they covet, is a travesty to what the last 35 years have taught us about the dynamics of abuse. To suggest that Jodi Arias was a victim of an abusive boyfriend flies in the face of everything we have learned about power, control and obsession in intimate partner and stalking crimes. Far worse, to remain blind to the evidence of stalking and premeditated homicide because of the genders of the perpetrators and/or victims, is to send us back 35 years to the years before the case of Francine Hughes and The Burning Bed brought the realities of domestic abuse out of the closet, and gave victims some help and hope, however limited it remains.

Moreover, in the years that have followed the case of Francine Hughes, we have come to recognize that not all women are perfect victims. Prostitutes, drug addicts, liars and thieves can all be victims of stalking and domestic abuse, and that does not excuse the crime. Nor does misleading a man, treating him badly, cheating on him or using him for sex, money or home repairs, justify being slaughtered.

Just because a woman treats a man badly is no excuse for killing her. And just because a man treats a woman badly is no excuse for killing him. Travis Alexander may not have respected Jodi Arias outside the bedroom, and she may well have wanted more from their relationship than he was willing to offer her. But the only way to promote informed awareness of domestic abuse and intimate partner homicide is to recognize that sometimes the abusers are not men. Sometimes they're the victims.

Re: Juror 5 dismissal.

http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region_phoenix_...

In court records, we found a transcript of a phone call made to Judge Sherry Stephen’s division phone at 8:36 a.m. on February 23.

According to the transcript, the caller claims there are reports that the juror needs to be watched.

“The one with multi-colored hair is attempting to coach Arias from the jury box. She shakes her head no, no, no to tell Jodi not to answer a question,” the caller alleged in the message on Stephens' voicemail.

The caller then asks the judge if the alleged actions are permissible and if it should be looked into.

The caller continues on to say that “it’s the woman with pink and blue hair and she’s trying to coach Arias, trying to influence Arias’ answers from the jury…”

This complaint was not mentioned in the motion that was filed by Arias' team on Sunday, but involves the same juror.

She is indeed a disturbed individual. I've been listening to the interrogation tapes (thanks, Rose!) and counting how many times she requested, then pleaded to see the pictures of Travis after his death. Then broke down in court when she saw one. I'm curious what her desire to see his dead body was.
What I noticed is that she asked Detective Flores if she could have her purse so she could apply her makeup. Also, in the 48 Hours interview, it shows her applying makeup. if she gets the Death Penalty, will she want a full makeover before she is executed? Add narcissistic to her list of personality disorders.

They've left this witness on too long now, and the last time I looked they were still in February and talking about some woman's cat's bowl being empty when she came in from work. LAV would have worked for a day, but several days of it has to be annoying the jury. Particularly when all she's doing is repeating exactly what Jodi said and throwing in a few inane examples of abuse. She just goes too far, too long. The cat was kicked, the cat was taken away - I'm with her. The cat's food bowl was empty for less than 8 hours, I'm jumping off right there.

This woman, although nice and grandmotherly and hanging out in battered shelters for 30 years, really hasn't said much. What she has said sounds canned, rehearsed, and gender unfriendly. She's seen real abuse crawling into the shelters for safety. That she would say all this on national tv will completely discredit her to the real victims. She will fold under cross, no matter how it's presented.

Watching the tapes of Jodi's parents, I truly feel sorry for them. Her mom is certainly in shock. She does tell us that Jodi has had some mental problems right along.

LaViolette, on the other hand, seems pretty credible to me. Only problem I have is that she seems to base quite alot on her journal entries.

I've tried to feel sorry for the parents, but I am so angry at them for not getting Jodi the help they were very aware she needed. Now someone is dead and she's likely to spend her life behind bars. They weren't even shocked that she was accused of murder. I'd be shocked if my daughter's grades dropped.

LAV talks as if she was in the room with Jodi and Travis and relaying what she saw. All she can base any opinion on is some journals and Jodi's lies. I've listened to every witness, including Samuels, intently but I can't listen to her anymore until cross. Unfortunately, she'll be on the stand under direct for at least another full day reiterating Jodi's stories.

I have yet to catch up on today's proceedings but seems like I did not miss out on much. Thanks for the info! Now off to see the recap......

LaViolette is aware that Arias is a consummate liar, right?

Also, I am starting to wonder if LaViolette is trumpeting her "expertise" in this case as a fight for all battered women, rather than the specific case she is on?

I see her as a slightly more credible witness than Samuels. How disappointing!

When does Martinez get to cross examine her?

Rose, I suspect it will be next week when cross begins. I'd be surprised if Wilmott gets through direct today at this pace, and LAV gets distracted with stories that have absolutely nothing to do with the case.

Goodmorning Hydri

Also, factor in the lazy four day schedule and a judge who has proved inept in managing the pace. Is this Judge enjoying the camera, perhaps another reason why she calls "approach" so damn much. The judge does have pride in her appearance, nice looking mature ... was she cast for this role by whomever assinged her the case.

Thanks, hybrid. You are probably right about Willmott and the pace it is moving. The 'good stuff' will likely happen when I am unable to give it the attention I would like. :(

Rose, you and I are close in age and still in career mode. I'm listening to LaViolette's testimony right now. and wondering - how do you sustain continuing education, keep up to date on your field, write books and communicate with other professionals and not know what instant messaging, texting, and email are? Not just not use them, that's hard enough to believe. But not know what they are? Is this part of the good ole girl and/or grandma image they're trying to portray in this witness?

Yes, next Wednesday. Full on family reunion (happens every other year). Just in my immediate family, there will be 23 of us (in laws, nieces and nephews). I am so looking forward to it!

Hybrid, I really liked LaViolette early on but has since become disenchanted with her. With you last post, I believe she either pumped herself up quite a bit or just spread herself too thin. Not sure how or who can make Arias seem like a good or battered woman.

Granted some of her testimony was valid regarding battered or abused women but not all will respond or act in the same way. In that regard, Arias is in a league of her own. To me, the abuse Arias suffered does not fit the manner in which Alexander was murdered.

Go Martinez!

Is it just me or does LaViolette often look to the defense table? Either with a smile, a smirk or even what I see as looking for support?

What!

You would not like JA if this had never happen. If she had been a nieghbor or work associate. Probably, Hybrid would have felt the same way.
