It's not a custom
It's the law, in most places

In all States, though, funeral processions have the Right of Way
Non-procession vehicles are prohibited from interfering with the procession in any way (except emergency vehicles)

Only the lead vehicle must stop for traffic lights and stop signs
All following vehicles may and must follow the lead vehicle when the procession is moving
