According to www.wakeupwalmart.com , Wal-Mart continues to pay poverty-level wages, forcing many of its workers to rely on public assistance programs. Wal-Mart fails to provide health care to over 775,000 workers and their families. In fact, nearly 1 out of every 2 children of Wal-Mart workers are either uninsured or on public health care. Wal-Mart costs taxpayers as much as $1.4 billion a year, and is projected to cost $9.1 billion over the next five years, because so many Wal-Mart workers and their families are forced onto public health care.
Studies in Iowa have shown that some small towns lose up to 47% of their retail trade after 10 years of a Wal-Mart store moving in nearby. Another recent study showed that when Wal-Mart moves into a community, wages decline by 5% for all workers, not just retail.
The Panhandle Ethical Shoppers are a group of citizens in Northwest Florida and South Alabama who work to expose the negative effects that Wal-Martís practices have on our society. They work with other concerned citizens across the U.S. in pressuring Wal-Mart to make much needed reforms. They have monthly meetings and can be contacted at panhandleethicalshoppers@earth link.net.

Walmart helps more families than they hurt.
Walmart allows the poor to afford luxury items that they would not otherwise be able to buy, and they also allow the poor to afford neccessities. The only people pushing for Walmart to provide a better wage are the union groups. No one is forcing the workers of Walmart to work there. If they don't like it... those people can educate themselves to get a better job where healthcare and benefits are to their liking.I shop at walmart and will continue to do so. The prices are fair and it makes my weekly budget go much farther.

First of all to all you who say walmart helps people afford and that poverty is a behavior problem and all that crap i'm sorry but a company that is worth as much as walmart is (which is alot more than most can even comprehend) can afford to pay thier employees a little more or AT LEAST provide better health care and benefits to full time employees. This Walmart company is worth more than companies that pay thier employees six figure salaries. alot more. yes walmart has "always low prices" that allow the little man to buy higher quality items but that does not excuse the fact that a company that makes $244.5 billion a year (making it almost THE most profitable company in America) pays its full time employees barely enough to support the average two person family. Do the research or keep your mouth shut.

<quoted text>
I know it is true about most Europeans. I have had the life experience of living there. I seriously doubt you have. Most Europeans do not have cars,garages,or own their own homes.It is too expensive. The taxes alone would put them under especially in France.I'll say it again..MOST AMERICANS THAT ARE CONSIDERED "POVERTY" LIVE BETTER THAN MOST EUROPEANS!
Educate yourself and quit depending on everyone else to dig you out of your lifes misfortunes!

educate yourself and get yourself out of a rut. Go work for another company if you don't like it. quit having tons of kids and expecting everyone else to take care of them. IT is called SELF RELIANCE! And no...I will never keep my mouth shut.

Talking about thier low prices? Those low prices are enabled by people in Japan who work for nothing and live in dorm like housing where they are charged rent, water bill, and electricity. These charges are taken straight out of there pay checks. These pay checks where they make 2.50 a hour. Not to mention these drom like living arrangement are not nice! There have to work 6 to 7 days a week 12 hours a day. They are only suppose to work 5 days a week but when inspection officers for there toys and clothing plants come they are forced to lie about days and hours they work. If they do not lie they will be fired and have no source of money. So those low prices really arent fair but for things other then toys and clothes that we get low prices on, Yea, we get low prices for that immediate buy but end up paying for it in the form of tax subsidys. Wal mart causes a negative social impact.
