First off, obviously academics are more important than sports, no one is denying that.
But if the school board cuts middle school sports down to intramurals like they are talking about, you might as well say goodbye to high school sports having any chance at being competitive in the next few years. "Drawing names out of a hat" for teams? Come on, these kids will have faced no competition when they get to lee high. Or worse yet, you'll have a handful of ballhogs that are used to having to do everything on their team and don't know how to trust their teammates.
If you want to have intramurals fine, so that every little johnny and little susie gets a chance to play. But don't take away the school team. You are just hurting the good athletes that may have a chance at getting a scholarship later in high school.
Oh and by the way, the schools paid for their own buses this year, so none of the cost came out of the county budget. So if cost isn't a factor, why are they wanting to cut middle school sports???

The schools might have paid for the fuel for the buses and the drivers but who paid for the cost to purchase the buses, the insurance , tires, other maintenance and other incidentals? Free is not free, someone had to pay those other cost! Also just how many kids from Lee High signed football scholarships this year? any other sports? verses how many kids at Lee High? What 8 out of 160 that graduated? Come on you are going to have to have a better argument to get my vote on this one! Principals are going to change, sports spending is going to stop. We have to stop this wasteful spending on money on the frills we can not afford.

The buses were already bought, it's not like they were just purchased for sports trips. Yes it may put a few extra miles on them, but not enough to make any difference, compared to their daily routes. What, 5 football trips and 8-10 basketball trips a year, none of which are over an hour? And what about the bus drivers who depend on those trips for extra income? I'm sorry, but if the schools are willing to pay for the buses themselves, then what is the problem with having sports? Stop being a hater.

If 8 got scolorships that's 8 more heading in the right directon that's probley 8 that would might not been able to go to college so what is your problem.buses don't belong to you and you have no Say in the matter if they don't want them to us the bus that's ok parents will take them and when we take it back over don't ask for part of gate money or to sell anything at the games sports makes a lot of money for the schools and parents still donate for mew uniforms and things they need.
Bus ride is all the board gives sports but you can have it just don't stick your hand out wanting the money made from sports.

N B K, with the way you type, if you are a parent please go back to school and learn a few things. If you are not a parent, you probably are to involved in sports and need to concentrate more on your classroom time! Might want to pick up a class on economics either way. Sports are called EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES for a reason, they are EXTRA ACTIVITIES that you might get to do. The buses belong to the county, the schools belong to the county, and any thing that is done on the school property is and will be controlled by the county. You can still have you little PTO games and fight over everything, just like another topic on here over who gets picked for the all star teams,(LOL) but a lot of the rest of us taxpayers are tired of seeing our money wasted on sports for every grade. Let the 8th graders play at Lee High and let the lower grades have their PTO ball.

Ok, thats true. So the county is ran on taxpayer money, so the 25% of Lee County that is employed should get to make the decisions.Since that minority includes me, I vote for sports :)

I'm sorry you got picked last everyday in gym class back in the day and now you have a vendetta against athletes. Like I said, no one is saying to put athletics above academics. But sports and other extracurricular activities give kids something to do, which is a major concern around here. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather have my kid playing sports or doing something else after school than running around with their buddies looking for something to do, which almost always leads to trouble. Besides, sports promote teamwork, which like I mentioned earlier will not happen if they're forced to play intramurals.

Didn't get picked last. Played and lettered in three out of four sports in high school. Not against sports, it does build a better person in those tough enough to stay the course. Just a realest I look at what we can afford. I drive a Ford because I can not afford a Caddie!

Well they did it. Basketball and volleyball will be intramural (played only within the school), while football and track will remain school sports and get the luxury of playing other schools. No competition for these kids playing intramurals. Those two sports will die at lee high now in a couple of years. And hmm, football for boys in the fall but no volleyball for girls? Title IX anyone??

I actually like the fact that middle school will be intramural for ball...some of those kids go to tryouts and give it their all, and then are basically told they arent good enough to be on the team...i saw it with my own eyes....its all in who you are and who you know! At least all kids can play now as an equal...not just the popular kids will make the team.

I think middle school should be focusing more on actual EDUCATION than intramurals! Thanks to No Child Left Behind and SOL's, schools are cranking out morons...i think people need to get priorities straight about what school is about!!!

Are you being serious right now? It's called competition. At the 8th grade level it's time to step away from the booster ball mentality. It is essentially the same as jv. When you start playing outside the county against the middle school teams of the high schools in our district then it gets tough. Yes some kids give it their all in tryouts, but the harsh reality of life is that there just isn't enough room for everybody all the time. If you don't get picked for a job are you going to cry that it isn't fair? And as far as "picking favorites", don't know what goes on at jms, but it does not happen at pms. Turner and rhonda are very fair. You just can't have a successful team and get all you need to get done in practice with 30 kids on a team. I hate to see any kid disappointed, but that's just the way life goes sometimes. It will happen the next year anyway when they try out for jv, so why not get the kids ready that are actually going to make it in high school?

Actually no it is not a part of school. By looking at you typing and language skills sports must be all you did in school! Sports is an extra curricular activity, just like one act plays, forensics, band. No where does the state of Virginia say that your child has a requirement to be offered sports in a school setting. Only Title IX says that if an extra curricular activity is offered to one gender then it must be offered to the other gender or an activity of equal opportunity in the same time period.

"insted (instead)of going home eating getting.(no period needed) fat and playing video games or hanging out in town and doing drugs" Maybe you need to join you child a participate in more extra curricular activity so you will not be fat, sitting on the couch, or out in town doing drugs!
