My mother was a patient recently and I am very uncomfortable with the young man doing his internship there. He is an employee of Friendship Ambulance (didnt have a name tag on, but I have seen him with their uniform on in the past). He talks about things that I know is covered under HIPPA with his friends. I overheard this myself. The hospital should not allow just anybody to hang out in the ED unless they are employees there for their workshift. I am filing a detailed complaint with the board of medicine and with Welmont. Has anyone else experienced this?:

I hate to hear that happened but i am not surprised. He's just a kid that thinks he knows everything. The volunteer ambulance services (3 of them) ran him off for that very reason. Now he's at Friendship doing his clinical training at the hospital. He won't be at either place for very long. They will get rid of him too once they figure him out.

I think they are talking about the Glass kid. He's the one I saw out there when my hubby had the flu.

Jared is a good kid who loves helping people. He has a lot to learn about getting along with others because he is very young. He does have excellent skill and knowledge as far as his patient care. He gets excited. The old farts tend to forget what it was like to be young and smart and excited. Let this young man learn. Be supportive of him instead of trying to break him down.

patient care is an important skill for EMS or EMT personnel. However respecting patients privacy is just as important. Hopefully someone can help this young man become a more well rounded employee.

contact the privacy officer there , just call the main hospial between 8 &3. U can file a complaint with them and hippa is not something that is to be taken lightly serious charges can be filed . This applies to anyone who has had this problem. I would encourage anyone who thinks there information has been discussed for reasons other than their care to file. Hope this helps

Personally I don't like the idea of those kids "getting experience" in the emergency department. I pay out the a$$ for medical care. I want to deal only with professionals for that very reason. I sure don't want some kid out talking about my health or diagnosis or whatever with his buddys.

I can certainly understand your concern but the clinical environment cannot be accurately duplicated in a controlled setting. For as long as medical professionals have been trained, they've been trained in the clinical environment. Doctors nurses EMTs and allied health professionals all got their start by practicing with experienced providers. It can be a bit unnerving to know that a student is working with you but there is always an experinced licensed provider on hand to guide them.

You may be able to file as many complainats as you want but this young man wasn't in a HIPPA violation unless the patients name, information, or social was discussed. There is nothing wrong with discussing interesting things that come and go in and out of the ER, however, wait until your aren't around your patients!!

Seems to me they should let the trainees work at teaching hospitals or university hospitals not community hospitals. Just my opinion.

I find this thread very disturbing. The Joint Commission should be notified of these concerns.

I know for a fact that even if you refuse to allow students in during your surgeries to watch, they will slip them in there anyways. They have always done that. You have no privacy at this hospital.

Is this a Wellmont policy or is the staff on violation of company policy?

I know my surgery was watched by a student and I had signed the paper refusing any students to be present during my surgery and told them also that I did not want them in there because I knew most of them and I did not want them dicussing me and my surgery in class and seeing me naked. I explained that I had these people at my place of work doing clinicals and they would be my co-workers. I did not want them to see me naked. I was told by the student and classmates all about my surgery. I also know several people that refused having students in during their surgeries that students were slipped in. It's always been common practice at LRMC. You can judge my post nut, clueless, offtopic if you want to but it is all TRUE. Lots of things go on at this hospital.

Any problems like this should be brought to the hospital. I would suggest any with any kind of privacy issue they have with lrmc to take it to the privacy officer, patient advocate, or even administration. Talking about your issues on hear will help nothing other than if u just want to vent, if u want to make a change u need to stand up and let someone know about the issue u can file a complaint and noone other than who u speak to about your issue will ever know your name. Patient privacy is something to not be takin lightly. Just if u have a issue report it.

Seems to me that you would be glad to have the help. Many health professionals intern and train in rural areas. Many of the doctors that work here now and have for years, came here this way and chose to stay. Be glad this opportunity is available
