The FD did not jump the gun too quickly. They have no choice but to suspend this person from day to day operations until this is resolved. There is no choice in the matter. They did the right thing.

I am a fellow Yates County Firefighter w/ Mr. Perry and can vouch for his character and personality. To the faceless coward who called him a loser, you have no right to judge this man.
The media must have had nothing else to report today, because they traveled all the way to Benton just to film shots of the Fire Station. There was no need to give this kind of negative publicity to Mr. Perry or Benton Fire Department.
The media does not take into consideration of who they hurt when they spotlight stories like this. If this was some average Joe from downtown Potter (Yates County), it would not be on the news and it may not even make the newspaper. Since Mr. Perry is a public icon and outstanding member of the Fire Service, the media decides to destroy all he has worked for and achieved.

All I hear about is how this guy was the volunteer fire chief in some hick town in Yates county.. No mention of his full time job... was he unemployed or is this another attempt by 10nbc to sensationalize a story? You can also tell that this small rural volunteer fire dept is beside themselves with this...From what I've read this has nothing to do with the fire dept and is more of a personnel matter that they have already addressed by suspending him. Period. Saying they "might" have to talk to their attorney about removing him as a member if found guilty. Leadership in most organizations wouldn't need to speak to an attorney to remove a person if convicted of a crime. If he's convicted you send him a certified letter and tell him he is no longer welcome. Plain and simple. I would agree they do need an attorney if they are that clueless. Preferably an attorney with experience with the law in regards to the fire service. They are in high demand and every fire district in the state wants one. And they aren't cheap!

to play devil's advocate, who's to say she didn't put herself into this matter? how did he get her number? forced coersion? sure, what he did is wrong, but let's not pretend the 16 year old is that naive and wouldn't possibly get some ego boost about flirting with an older guy...i have a feeling both were playing with fire and BOTH should have known better

Pain??? H-E-L-L-O??? IT TAKES TWO TO TEXT!!!
While I understand in the eyes of the law (if he is guilty) that he is the one responsible, I sincerely question the element of pain.

The Benton Fire Dept does not deserve all this negative publicity. It really has nothing to do with them other than he happened to be the fire chief when he supposedly did these actions on his own time. Its a personnel matter. With that said. I don't really care if he's an outstanding member of the fire service. That doesn't excuse him from this behavior if its true. As a long time firefighter I can tell you this doesn't excuse me from having morals. If these allegations are true we don't need people like that. I have seen much bigger supposed contributors to the fire service asked to leave and not come back for similar actions unbecoming of a firefighter. We don't need people like that!

Glad to see another Firefighter's point of view on this. It is very unfortunate that the media felt the need to drag Benton Fire Dept into this. If the allegations against Mr. Perry happened did not take place during a Benton Fire Department function or Emergency, then there was no need to publicize it. There was even no need to point out that he is a Fire Chief.
Stay safe.

I would like to point out that the media did not state what the text messeges contained. All we know is that they were considered "explicit". For all we know, the messege could have been one of those Fowarded cartoon pix messeges or an adult joke that contained adult material.
These types of text messeges are circled around nation wide as we speak. Typically, the media only reports one side to the story and makes this man look like a predator.

If this was some guy that worked for Waste Management and picked up garbage for a living.( not badmouthing garbage men in anyway just using it as an example) this would not have even made the news. Just because he is a fire chief...or was is beside the point and the media has nothing better to do than start problems in the community. Whether this was a small town or the City of Rochester it doesn't matter. Get some real news!!!!!
