Pendleton, OR – January 18, 2006 –UNICOM’s latest wireless Internet access network is now operating in downtown Pendleton. The “hotspot” provides free Internet access in the downtown corridor within a six-block radius that extends from the corner of Emigrant Avenue and South Main Street. Pendleton is the third in a series of installations by the company in Eastern Oregon, following deployments in La Grande last month and in Baker City earlier in the year.

“UNICOM has a history of bringing innovative telecommunications technologies to the communities we serve,“ says Director of Internet and IT, Rob Naughton.“In fact, we were the first Internet service provider (ISP) in Pendleton. Having a hotspot in the downtown core is good for business and good for the consumer and we plan to extend this technology to other communities we serve in the near future.”

Naughton noted that the coverage area is expandable by retransmitting the wireless signal from participating businesses adjacent to the downtown core using UNICOM’s wireless distribution system (WDS). The free network is not intended to replace business or primary source high-speed Internet connections.

To access the network, users simply select UNICOM from available wireless connections on their laptop and open an Internet browser. After logging onto the UNICOM portal, users are free to explore the web.

UNICOM provides local and long distance telecommunication services, high-speed Internet, business telephone systems and integrated voice and data networks to more than 18,000 business and residential customers in Oregon and Washington. The 21-year old company is headquartered in Bend with nearly 100 employees in nine offices. For more information, call 1-800-342-4708, email [email protected], or find them on the web at .
