This needs to be long enough to make sure no other students decides that all he would get is a slap on the wrist. Maybe probation would also be in order for the vast part of the sentence. This way we can keep an eye on him and not totally destroy his life.

Is it safe to say "Life is getting a bit hard for everyone." Well except for those who inherit their treasures or for those who have been blessed.
