Wow... how does something like this happen? So sorry for the boys' families. I cannot even begin to imagine the depth of their grief at losing a son with such a promising future.

Sad parent: You don't see evidence? How about the fact that the adult filled out a form stating the boys could not swim, and the boys told them they could swim. Why wasn't the paperwork checked out?

I know people who were at the pool, and it is a fact that those boys were instructed to stay in a particular area. It's also a fact that the boys both indicated that they could swim. Certainly their decisions played a role here. What is most fascinating is how so many people could have "missed it". Both on-duty lifeguards were there. Several huddle leaders were there. The pool was lined with coaches/parents -- people watching/enjoying the diving and jumping. My friend was watching all the antics the entire time and saw nothing....there are a lot of broken hearts over this. Accident? Yes. Negligence? Harder to consider having been there.

Had the boys snuck back in after everybody else had cleared out? I thought I had read that somewhere?

That the boys might have jumped in late is one theory people are considering -- maybe when eyes were off them? Nobody knows for sure. I suspect that one tried to help the other & both drowned. I'm told that it is a fairly common occurance in water accidents.

The head count on the bus immediately after the party was when the boys were noted as missing. 10 minutes is a short period of time, but not if a person is unconscious under water.
