How does a traumatized child comprehend the concept of "mom and dad," meaning total strangers thousands of miles away instead of her original mom and dad?

Tell her you're going to take her in and care for her, but don't tell her, in the midst of losing EVERYTHING in her life, that *poof* her parents have been replaced.
