Restoration of The Stones Crossing of The River at Burley-in-Wharfedale

Save Our Stones

#1 Aug 25, 2009
The issue of building a bridge across the river at Burley-in-Wharfedale has been ongoing for over 100 years. All attempts have failed. The Burley Bridge Association proposals have come up with a hugely extravagant, unnecessary and vastly expensive design thus ensuring it will never be built.
A more pragmatic solution would be to restore “The Stones” which have provided a route across the river for over 200 years.
The Stones also protect the weir from "scouring" so without The Stones, there could be a risk of failure and a tidal wave hitting Otley.
A website was set up on 21 August 2009. This outlines the background and provides an opportunity to register support and vote on whether to press for restoring The Stones or not.
Restoration of The Stones will enable walkers to connect walks north and south of the river and increase the variety of circular walks from Otley and Ilkley in particular.
