The name was changed in 1981. Everyone should be happy they are no long the "chinks".

I can understand someone in 1960 going to high school there and not really understanding the meaning of that word. However, if you can really say you do not understand how it can be demeaning today, I challenge you to go to any chinatown and start calling the people there "chinks".

I wonder how long you would last? If you had the balls to do that????

My wife Michele and I live near Allentown, PA but she is from Pekin, IL and when told me her high school nickname was the "Chinks" I thought she had to be kidding. She has told me that growing up, she never thought the word "Chink" was a bad thing either. When I told friends that my wife was a Pekin Chink they didn't believe me until I showed them her yearbooks, including pictures of the Chink and Chinkette

Hey MiMi it was 80-81 with the protest of changing the name happened. It was my Junior, first year on east campus. Just not sure if it was fall of 80 or spring 81. I had two years as chinks and two as dragons. I have my sophomore year book as chicks and junior a dragons.

Are you sure that was in 76? I remember going to the Pekin mall when I was about 12 and getting "PCHS Chinks" earrings...that would have been in the early 80's, like 82...I totally remember the whole argument about changing the name, but I was only 6 in '76 and don't think I would have been aware of that at the time...
Confused and curious!!

Akse, you have to understand that Pekin was/is a very backwards town. Hell, most of the people I knew had never even met a black person. Coming from Chicago it was quite a cultural shock.

Hey,
I am doing a project in school about racist school mascots. Why was your school named the chinks and are there any editorials or newsclippings as to why they changed it.

What in the world does meeting a black person have to do with being backwards?? Pekin was a great place to grow up, and I have since met a lot of black people. Are you aware of how many places in the world don't have blacks - are they all backwards?? Your comment is rediculous.

Once a Chink, always a Chink! And like you, I never once thought of the name being anything except what it was - a symbol of good old Pekin High.
I still have a few Pekin Chinks booster buttons. I think maybe the Pep Club sold them.
I played your town in Hockey several times when you were known as the Chinks. I'd love to get one of those buttons if you are willing to part with one or two.

I remember growing up in the early 80's and I am pretty sure we were Chinks when I was in grade school. In fact I still have a Pekin Chinks t-shirt.I moved away in 87 and people now that I talk to just can't believe that was our name.Hell growing up I didn't really know what it was or care what it meant I just wanted to be a Chink. How the times have changed.

Pekin CHINKS forever!!!
I graduated in 1971. Anymore 1971 Chinks out there anywhere???
My sister graduated in 1961. We were both Chinks. We both agree that instead of the Dragons the school should still be the Pekin Chinks.
In no way is the name Chinks derogatory. I don't know how true it it is but I always thought go straigt through & you might just hit Peking, China. I thought that was sort of cool.

Chinks is not derogatory as long as you're not Asian or more specifically, Chinese.

When was that school built was it some kind of misplaced racial slur reaction to WWII and Japan?

I bet chink will be making a comeback along with zipperhead now that the movie Gran Torino has come out.
