PEEBLES, OH - An Adams County man is in custody after, deputies said, he opened fire on passing drivers.
Officials said state Route 41 was shut down for several hours from the bottom of Jacktown Hill, near Hull Road, to the intersection of state Route 32 while crews dealt with the incident. The People's Defender newspaper said state Route 781 was also closed from Jacktown to state Route 41.
Deputies were sent to a home on Jake Campbell Road about 12:30 p.m. Monday after getting a call from 55-year-old Michael Gehler's wife.
The woman told investigators that she had to run to a neighbor's house because Gehler was shooting at her.
The Sheriff's Office said when deputies arrived, Gehler started shooting at them, as well.
Authorities were forced to close the nearby roadways to keep people safe.
"There were shots fired at the car, shots fired in the house and from the inside of the house to the outside multiple times. We're not sure on a count yet. We're waiting on crime scene [investigators] to get that information to us," Adams County Chief Deputy Jeff McCarty said.
Deputies said Gehler eventually surrendered and was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation.
McCarty said no one was hurt, but charges are pending.
