Santa Fe farmers market has truly become a place for the kind of people Santa Fe has been trying to attract for years. That is people who can afford to pay far more than the going price for food than in say Albertsons.
Let's be fair, farmers market is not that much more expensive than Whole Foods. But most working locals realize that after the cost of parking and gas to drive way up to the northside of town, groceries are just much cheaper at the store. Lots of kudos to SF for making such a great northside shopping experience. Those fresh vegetables look so good on the leather interior of a Lexus and with the AC they won't even wilt before you get them home to your gated community with starting prices from the 1.5s (million for us south siders) I wonder if Debbie Jaramillo enjoys the farmers market as much as she hoped she would!

I have seen a diverse mix of people at the market but agree the prices are steep all for the organic title. I don't recall prices being this high in the past or at other farmers markets and I am curious, Whole Foods has high prices but they have marketing, adverting, large staffs, utilities, rent on store space, high insurance, employee costs, fancy displays and on and on. Not trying to be a smart ass here but why are the prices so high at the farmers market? I understand that the farmers need to make a living but the overhead of growing a small amount of vegetables or fruit I suspect would have a lower overhead than a large store. I was with a friend recently who paid $5 for the punyist looking little basket of pitiful strawberries couldn't have been even 12 strawberries in there.... but they were organic.
Signed - stickin with Trader Joes for now

Everything tastes better grilled over charcoal and we have designed a new charcoal grill that makes it a lot easier. Please have a look at the German Grill. Thanks.

Its far better to eat less food but healthier food. Portion control is the way to both moderate your food bill and your wasteline. Support the farmers market.
