Can someone please settle an argument for me? My friend says that indians don't pay taxes if they live on or work on a reservation but if they work off the reservation for a company that is not owned by indians, that they have to pay taxes like everyone else. And if they buy land off the reservation that they have to pay property taxes, too. I thought that, being an indian, they never had to pay taxes ever no matter where they live or work. Does anyone know for sure who is right?
Judy - Fact is all Choctaw people pay taxes of some sort, even WHEN working for the tribe. It is true Choctaw tribal members who live and work on the reservation do not have state taxes deducted from our payroll, however we do pay federal tax. Now, Choctaw tribal members who live off the reservation and work for the tribe pay both state and federal taxes. All non-tribal members employed by the Tribe pay both state and federal taxes, which Mississippi benefits millions thanks to MBCI - a top ten employer of this great State. If what you initially thought to be true, my personal wal-mart purchases would be tax-free and so would my vehicle purchases from where ever...or somebody forgot to tell the bank!!

The funnest thing most people against the Choctaw Casino talk about is it would be unfair to the other casinos. When a Casino Operator says something is unfair that is freaking funny!!! When i go and lose my money to any casino can i tell someone it's not fair. It's time for a new casino on the coast, Maybe I'll win there, Im all for a Choctaw Casino there payouts will be better!!!

Hi,

I am Choctaw and I live in Ohio. I lived on the rez when I was younger. I am a full-time manager at a major land developers office and I am also a full time University student working towards my Bachelors Degree.

I think it is unfair to judge the whole tribe by a few peoples actions. I have a few cousins that live on the rez that DO take advantage of certain things and at the same time I have cousins that DON'T and are Choctaw Princesses (which basically means they are all that; brains, beauty, and sets a great example in the community). I'm sure you have some people in your family you may not want to claim.

We should not be prejudice especially in this day in age. You shouldn't say Choctaws are nasty you should say that PERSON is nasty. Why bring his ethnic background into this blog? There are bad people, lazy people(who don't want to work), scum people, and drunks in every nationality. I can send you pics of me, my sisters, cousins, even my mum. We are beautiful, not nasty! So please be more considerate next time you bad talk someone.

The Choctaw Indians have opened Casinos in Philadelphia MS since 1994. When then first opened their gambling policies seemed to be fair. Now, they are just money hungry people taking advantage of the poor. If they paid taxes, something would be coming back to Mississippi citizens. There are numerous studies that those who live closest to a casion are the MOST hurt. You tell me, "Are slot machines operated without bias, Are they fair to all?" NO
ANYTHING THAT HAS A COMPUTER CHIP CAN BE CONTROLLED, IS THAT RIGHT? ARE OUR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS LOOKING OUT FOR IT'S CITIZENS OR THEMSELVES?

im Choctaw. i live in Calif. you want to talk about lazy and nasty people. Calif is the worse for drunks and laziness and living off Gov funds. their is a mix of every nationality here. So b4 you start talking about Choctaws you need to look at everyone and maybe yourself and clean your own back yard b4 cleaning up someone else's. Choctaws are people too. so show some respect until you can prove otherwise!!

The American Indians were here first, their land was stolen. If someone stole your parents land, how would you feel about it? I read in the Hattiesburg paper, and I quote, "How dare you Mississippi Band of Choctaw etc. " Let me turn the table, how dare you!! You and all others live on the Mississippi Band of Choctaw land that was stolen. Why the hell should we allow the Choctaws to pay any taxes? I believe they are due their money for white and black to live on the land. Many Choctaws still live on the Reservation and still in poverty. This is FACT!
The Indians were immigrants also,(crossing over the land bridge from Siberia).

We didn't take the land, we conquered it. The war was fought, the whites won...get over it. That's what happens when you conquer a people. Read a history book. Expansion equals conquering.

Neshoba county Mississippi has always been my home. I'm 60 years old and most of the past years have been with Chief Martin as head of the tribe. I remember when he drove the Chevrolet and Buick rather than the Cadillac. He has made millions from his dealings in the name of the Choctaw tribe. I've always thought that this was wrong but it isn't any better with our other politicians. When is the last time you saw an average person go into politics and not come out wealthy? I run a small business now that is dependent on Choctaws making timely payments but deaths in the family, bad luck, or the sun coming up in the wrong direction prevents this from happening It may be wrong to sterotype a group but realize that sterotypes come from observation of the group.

I previously supported everything about the Mississippi Choctaws until recently. It has saddened me to realize "gross sex-immoralities prevail" among many of the Choctaw people. It is present among the elite managing this tribe. It is common for the Choctaw Tribal Supreme Court Chief Justice to be a home-wrecker and destroy another persons family by pursuing the newly hired "Laison Officer/Choctaw School System" knowing he was married and had 2-children of his own. Her actions and his, was conducted ongoing since arrival while his family patiently awaited for he to make appropriate arrangements to relocate his family to Mississippi. Such inappropriate behavior is common among this tribe, all conducted under the auspices of "duty calls/work related activities". Lack of moral training is common among Choctaws. I am a native person and where I come from, these type of problems are uncommon. Unfortunately, Choctaw women and men gives Indians a bad reputation.

I support the intent of a new Casino for Choctaws, they need the revenue to clean-up their social behavioral problems, because their behavior is destructive to other human beings lives and family settings.

Hi my name is Bill. I work at Pearl River Resort in Philadelphia, MS. Pearl River Resort is owned by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. I am going to tell you the truth about Choctaws. You can tell a difference between the ones that have stayed and went to school on the reservation and the ones that went to other schools. I went to Neshoba Central High School along with some Choctaws. The ones that went to other schools not on the reservation are reliable. I guess when they stay on the reservation they are not taught the responsibility and manners that others are taught outside the reservation. Choctaws are not reliable at all. They call in to work all the time. Everytime they get a distribution check they call in saying they are sick or someone in the family has passed away. It is horrible at how they are raised. They take everything for granted. They have the casino to profit off of and they won't even come to work. They are worthless people. Really they are. They take the distribution check and spend it on beer, stay home and get drunk. They have several kids just to get that check anyways. They are sorry and all are lazy. They need to wake up out of this Indian Dream they are in and get in the real world. If I had a house given to me, I would take better care of it than they do. They trash them houses and then just get another one. Choctaws are nasty. I have met very few that will actually work. Most don't care about nothing but themselves. They say that they are going to do away with all the non-indian people at the Resort and bring in all Choctaws. I have just one question for them, Who is going to come to work?
Wow Bill, your Neshoba County education is showing. You've given us enough material to judge you to be as stupid as they come, without generalizing and lumping you in with an entire group of people. Nope...your bonified.

Have you lost your mind? They have been fighting ever since the U.S government defrauded them out of their land by giving it to European immigrants! Not only was the land stolen, they were killed mostly and conquered by a roquush barbaric European people, they broke their own treaty's that they made with our Indigenous ancestors!!!! Go and read!!! Sick of people like you who tell other races of people, in particular those dark races of people to forget about what happened to our own ancestors!!! Yours you know and renmember, but telll us they are dead and no longer need to be remembered!!! My own ancestor my great great grandmother Indigenous to this land in America was captured and enslaved, but got blessed that our YAH compelled the U.S Government to give her 1000 acres where she was enslaved near. So please! It was their land to have and it is our right to fight for it! You need to go and educate yourself before telling a people what not to do!!!!
