We need to raise the general excise tax and consider some sort of legalized gambling. Schedule a constitutional convention and let the taxpayers vote of what they want.

Don't raise taxes until the DOE fixes its problems....why fund a dysfunctional system just to perpetuate it?

I am 45 years old and a victim of Hawaii education. Nothing new, they have always had a laid back view of education for the most part. I have lived in the mainland for the last 18 years and recently moved back to Hawaii and my daughter, who is in the 5th grade now is excelling past her classmates now. That's just the lifesytle here and the culture.
Of course Hawaii will either continue to separate it self from the rest of the U.S. or it will get on board and be up to today's standards and not go out of it's way to keep the people stuck on the rock.

Aloha,
Totally pathetic

All this shows the true colors of the governor, the legislators, the teachers and so forth. Even in most developing countries, they would not even think of cutting the education. What an embarassment for the U.S., suuposedly a world leader. These kids will suffer the effects for the rest of their lives.

Hawaii lives in the past believing that 4th rate educvation and low expoectations will be covered up with make work union jobs, state employment or philanthropy. It needs to end. People here need to get real and fast.
