What has America become?

Editor,

Has America become the land of special interest and home of the double standard?

Lets see: if we lie to the Congress, it’s a felony and if the Congress lies to us its just politics; if we dislike a black person, we’re racist and if a black person dislikes whites, its their 1st Amendment right; the government spends millions to rehabilitate criminals and they do almost nothing for the victims; in public schools you can teach that homosexuality is OK, but you better not use the word God in the process; you can kill an unborn child, but it is wrong to execute a mass murderer; we don’t burn books in America, we now rewrite them; we got rid of communist and socialist threats by renaming them progressive; we are unable to close our border with Mexico, but have no problem protecting the 38th parallel in Korea; if you protest against President Obama’s policies you’re a terrorist, but if you burned an American flag or George Bush in effigy it was your 1st Amendment right.

You can have pornography on TV or the internet, but you better not put a nativity scene in a public park during Christmas; we have eliminated all criminals in America, they are now called sick people; we can use a human fetus for medical research, but it is wrong to use an animal.

We take money from those who work hard for it and give it to those who don’t want to work; we all support the Constitution, but only when it supports our political ideology; we still have freedom of speech, but only if we are being politically correct; parenting has been replaced with Ritalin and video games; the land of opportunity is now the land of hand outs; the similarity between Hurricane Katrina and the gulf oil spill is that neither president did anything to help.

And how do we handle a major crisis today? The government appoints a committee to determine who’s at fault, then threatens them, passes a law, raises our taxes; tells us the problem is solved so they can get back to their reelection campaign.

What has happened to the land of the free and home of the brave?

I agreed with the fist sentence about Congress. The part about doing nothing for victims of crime is sensible.I like the part about not burning books, but rewriting them.I also agreed with our inability to close the border with Mexico.I took offense at the sentence"We take money from those who work hard for it and give it to those who don't want to work".I'm sick and tired of that attitude. In fact, the only thing in that paragraph I liked was the part about political correctness. The last paragraph about major crisis was okay.
Now was'nt that a waste of time.

Our social welfare system is beyond messed up. It is way too easy to get assistance and MANY people abuse it because they can. If they mandated drug testing, spot checked people using it and required the ones capable to work to get a job I might change my mind.

And then what would those people do when they lost those benefits?
They would resort to stealing and a number of other crimes to make up for it because in case you haven't noticed there are no jobs to be had just look at the help wanted section in the Virginian leader.
And before you say lock them up please know that it costs on average of $50,000 a year to house inmates.
As for drug testing im all for it but you cannot just include the poor because many people get money from tax payers, from govt grants to loans and subsidized programs and so on, but you don't look at that and say they must be drug tested. Hypocrisy much?

When are you people gonna learn Big business isn't the answer either. There needs to be a balanced approach to the issues some idea's from the left some from the right. But the right wing in this country refuses to compromise on any issue's. Are Democrats perfect? No. Are Republicans perfect? No. Its a balance between the two that made us the greatest country on the planet, but that's slowly fading away as the political rhetoric of the right divides this country.

I'm all for those needing assistance to receive it, don't read too much into my statements. It's the people receiving it because they are disabled, yet have no problems doing everything else except work, the people who can't keep a job because they are addicted to a bottle or a pill (which is an illness brought on because they allowed it), and the people who are just too lazy to work. I don't believe those of us who do work should feed someone so they can buy dope/booze with what cash they do have coming in.

Too much judgement here.I have personally known people on assistance. No one wants to live like this unless they are getting an awful lot of cash from family or friends.
As for the disabled;how do you know what it is to live in their shoes? It is so difficult to get on disability!!There's got to be something wrong with these people. The disability doctors are sooo particular.

Hard to get? One example, a man claims disability because his back won't let him work. He receives permanent disability so he never has to work again... Fast forward a few months and this poor disabled man is fishing daily, loading a Jon boat in his pickup by himself, digging in a garden, and working on a pickup truck restoration. Sounds to me that someone like that could work instead of living off of everyone else's tax dollar.

Good post TJ, that editorial is pretty much on the money.

I see your post upset some of the parasites among us. By the way, we shouldn't give a damn if they get "offended." These people are not American, they truly are parasites, who by their very existence are an offense to real Americans everywhere.

Thank you for the insult.I'm not really clear on this "parasite"stuff.I am a U.S. citizen, born here in southwest Virginia. Both of my parents were born here also.My Dad served in Europe in WWII.They quit school and went to work to help their families when they were young. They saw that I got an education.I have raised two children of my own and took care of others. As a young woman I kept house, canned ,sewed, took care of a wood stove to save money on heat, and cared for my husband and my mother until she passed away.I worked part time to help with the bills.Later,I worked in department stores and a deli.My husband works hard to get back on his feet.We went through a lay-off but now we are climbing back out of the financial hole. Now I am unable to work because of bad arthritis, but I can't get disability because we can't afford to drive 60 and 70 miles round trip to the SS doctors. You shouldn't make such mean little comments, when you have no idea how others live.

I know personally how hard it is to get disability. My husband works hard to take care of us.I have serious back problems, but I can do a lot of things.Just not for 6 or 8 hours continuously.
Anyway, workers pay for their disability out of every paycheck, just as you do.He's not living off everyone else's tax dollar. He's living off his own tax dollar!@!@!

"chandra23," since no names were mentioned in the post which you refer to, are the followers of this thread to assume that you have a guilty conscience? What makes you think that post was directed towards you personally? Surely, you don't live in such a self-centered world.

Bad logic: If your husband is working hard to take care of you, then me, how could he be "living off his own tax dollars"? The phrase "working hard" is incongruent with the phrase "living off his own tax dollars." That sounds a lot like someone living off the largess of the taxpayer.

Bad math: How much did your husband pay-in versus how much he is drawing out?

Moreover, what specifically did "Truth is" say that led you to the conclusion that that post was directed at your husband? There were no names mentioned in that post. This, too, begs the question: Guilty conscience, or just another example of self-centeredness?

huh!?You people are the self-centered ones.I wanted to make the point that you are too quick to make judgements about others! In all likelyhood no one that posted on this thread is recieving any kind of assistance at all. What would I have to be guilty about anyway?I thought that the original statement was an invitation to political and social discussion. Not to a low-blow name-calling match.Saying someone is not an American because they disagree with your opinion!?!Please!
