And Main St is wonderfully clear exept in front of Verizon... Narrow unshoveled sidewalk. You would think that a multinational corporation would have a budget that includes being a responsible neighbor.

<quoted text>Amen. As a pedestrian I am amazed at the lengths I have to go through just to traverse this city. You have piles of snow on every corner... There are some very conscientious homeowners who have beautifully passable sidewalk only to live next to irresponsible clods who leave it there. We have a city ordinance that has been on the books forever. How about giving this ordinance some teeth. Just fine the offenders 5 dollars a day. We can start this as a volunteer initiative to keep our children and elderly safely on the sidewalks!
Have you taken into consideration the Elderly and the Handicapped that are unable to shovel their sidewalks? Maybe there neighbors would be willing to help when they shovel theirs? Probably not much hope of that happening!

Absolutely, that is why the formation of a shovel squad made up of college kids looking to fulfill their community service, as well as high school students is a good foundation on which to build. I plan on making a few contacts at the college with the student activity office and see what can be arranged for just the folks you have mentioned. And BTW I have done just that for neighbors and the effort was appreciated and doing good just makes ya feel good! More people should give it a chance... Hint hint Tea Bagger Cultists!

Are you okay? Shovel squad? Community service? No. Kids don't do that anymore. College and high school kids don't have to fulfill any type of community service.

No, but college bound seniors have an opportunity to demonstrate to perspective colleges how community oriented they are. And the college kids... I have to believe that there are some good compassionate students... once again to show prospective employers that they excel at difficult tasks...organizing a group...management of a group. And please don't sell these kids short... I saw a couple of kids out shoveling for hire.

Pessimism isn't an attractive trait... I know we can do better!
