Given his lip-smacking relish for the agonizing unpeeling of familial pain, it's doubtful that Tracy Letts will be declared the official playwright of the state of Oklahoma any time soon.

While there are some redeemable aspects of the play - namely the performances of Amy Morton and Deanna Dunagan - the third act devolves into a trite soap opera worthy of Lifetime, or worse (is that worse?), Jerry Springer. Though Morton and Dunagan shine, the performances of Kimberly Guerrero (anything but "delicious") and the actress playing Amy's daughter were like awkward middle schoolers at a dance: rigid and painful to watch, so much so that we left the theater wondering how they were cast in the first place. And Letts doesn't do anything new with O'Neill or his worthy influences. Yes, the American family is unraveling. Yes, it's due to our dependency on substances, an illusion for the American delusion. O'Neill wrote a better play. Franzen wrote a better book. Letts puts together a familiar cast of characters from the American persona, a few laughs and cries, but not much more.

Oops! The production is going to Broadway and perhaps the West End where it will undoubtedly win numerous awards. How does it feel to be aesthetically so out of touch and so culturally backward? Kind of like the handful of simpletons who panned "Long Day's Journey Into Night" in 1956, I imagine... Well, don't fret, I'm sure there's a revival of some Neil Simon play just right for you around the corner.

Having just seen the play tonight, I must say it is brilliant. I have been a subscriber to the Steppenwolf Theater for over 17 years, and this may be the best of the so many excellent productions I have seen there. I will say and agree with Journey Into Mediocrity above that the performance of the actress who played Amy's daughter was strikingly amateurish. Her lines were spoken like an elementary school production, and it was amplified by the contrast with the amazing performances by everyone else (including Kimberly Guerrero, who I thought was excellent)
