Such is the result when a backward community hires ignorant, self-important Gestapo thugs down at their local cop shop. Mr. Fleming should have sued the pants off those knuckledragging morons.
Way to go

No kidding. Idiots in uniform is all we are dealing with here. They need to stick to chasing "moonshiners" and not people doing things they wish they had the guts, money, and talent to actually do themselves. Shoot down a glider? Are you kidding me? If the elected body and the citizens of this community had any common sense these morons pretending to be cops should be excused from their duties for making a threat like that. Personally, the TSA and the DHS should be going after them for criminial threats of threatening to shoot down an airplane.

I believe the actions of the court and prosecution to be reprehensible. Basically using coercion, the threat of continued prosecution and further legal expense, to force Mr Fleming to waive his rights to seek redress from Darlington County.

Nothing more than a case of small town politics. Everyone knows the law enforcement morons here were wrong but because the prosecutor, judge, and local sheriff/Chief of Police all probably play golf together; or share in the little "brown bags of money" that circulate through these small town judicial centers simply means there is no way a lawsuit against the city would be allowed.
In the end, they dropped the charges because they all realized how stupid these so called law enforcment morons acted. They got all excited thinking they were saving us all from the terrorists and were already looking forward to the Presidential ceremony and the "key to the city" day in their honor. So Barney Fife it's unreal.

This incident should have never happened. At any point during the 30 hour period someone should have interjected a little common sense and apologized to Mr. Fleming and driven him back to the airport so he could continue his day. Instead,(and yes,‘Barney Fife’ is the best description that came to my mind also..) they kicked their TV cop fantasy ego into overdrive, per the article the local cops started commandeering the airport facility, ordering the Unicom operator to demand the pilot land, falsified the report so as to justify their overzealous actions and to cover their ass and basically went berserk with no shred of evidence that there was a problem. Homeland Security, FBI piled even on after the local sheriff’s helicopter pilot showed them the VFR chart and told them there was no violation. Yes, there were multiple laws violated and looks like all of them were violated by the law enforcement agencies that are supposed to protect us. No matter if Mr. Fleming was forced to agree to not file suit just to get out of jail,(again probably another violation of law ;) this one horse department should be sued out of business and everyone involved fired immediately. It makes me absolutely furious that in the name of homeland security law enforcement can get away with anything, no matter how illegal and there are no consequences. If you put me in jail for false charges you better bring your check book. What the hell is “breach of the peace” anyway? It’s so vague and non-descript it could be used for sneezing in public and when they can’t find a real charge they use “breach of the peace”.
Unacceptable!! Send Sheriff J.W. Byrd your thoughts on this matter - [email protected] He didn’t have the courtesy to respond to questions on this incident. I don’t blame him; I would hide also if I did something this stupid.
