This is simply an attempt by the hospital to aquire more funds. What better way to alarm people? It's a publicity move. Brookhaven is very well funded ever since they became a trauma/medical center. Health care has become more about making money than helping folks. I'm sure this came from some PR company they hired. My bet is, they keep delivering babies for a long time.

You still need to make money, you can only get so much funding. How many uninsured individuals use the ER's as there primary physician?. Alot of them. The abuse of the system is outrageous. It's my taxpaying dollars that pay for these abuses to our system. I doubt that you even work in the health care. So you don't know what you are talking about.

New York Groove....Going to the ER because you have no medical insurance is abusing the system? What system? There is no system! No insurance, you have no regular physician. If your lucky, you can get your kids health care for free. System.....Hilarious

Low birthrate? No problem... Just bring a whole bunch of illegal aliens to the area where this Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center is. I guarantee you that they'll get that birthrate right up there. As a matter of fact, the hospital will be inundated with new births. Congress will appropriate all kinds of taxpayer funding to keep this center operating, too. Illegal aliens are doing the jobs Americans won't do anymore.

"Brookhaven is very well funded".....
This "very well funding", does it cover their expenses? You seem to know alot about Brookhaven Hospital, so answer that question....

Do you even know how much bad debt and charity care expenses Brookhaven has been incurring the past 5 years?

Do you know how many uninsured people utilize Brookhaven (i.e. destitutes and illegals)? How much money does Brookhaven receive when they serve these people? Come on, you must have the answer to those questions.....I want to hear it from you.

Low birthrate? In an area with so many illegal aliens? C'mon, how stupid do you think we are.

Does anyone know if the Hospital Spokesman Katherine Heaviside is the same as the high powered very conected President of the Huntington PR Firm.

If it is is then, most likely the Hospital is relying on her to make spin. Who is the spokeman on the Hospital payroll who is and has been located on the premisis. That's who I want to here from for an intelligent decision.

I'm curious how there are more expenses than revenue? How does a maternity unit lose money? It is not cheap to have a baby; are they saying that even with the income of the hundreds of births, they still lost money? Can anyone enlighten me on the economics of a hospital?

How dare these elected politicians complain about the very problem they caused. Effective July 1, my wife's Malpractice Insurance rates will increase by 18%. (she is a doctor, and yes she is affliated with Brookhaven). Where are we suppose to come up with this money. They do not care. The Malpractice rates have destroyed the medical profession, and yes; doctors are leaving this field as OB doctors rates are in the $100,000.00 range. Doctors are suppose to live with less as the lawyers rep hugh awards for malpractice cases an slap each other on the back. The insurance companies are paying doctors the same rates that they did in 2000, yet the premiums have skyrocketed. The elected loudmouths who's only interest is to have government fix every problem are the cause of the problem.

It is partly the economic situation in the hospital. The hospital does get paid from the state poverty fund for the so-called freebys. But, the doctors who are attending get paid only if the the patients have insurance or pay the doctor directly. The variety of patients coming to Brookhaven are poor without insurance and the doctors who treat them get paid nothing. The hospital does not pay a Doctor to be an attending, yet the doctor must become an attending in order to be allowed to hospitailze the patients from their private offices.

Very well said. People will not understand until there are no longer Doctors willing to care for them. I am not a doctor but I understand your point of view. My OBGYN left New York with a great practice to go to a state with less legal nonsense.

Shut that place down.. with the lack of medical care and most importantly concern of patients. My experience was horrible, I am not poor and my daughter could have died. Stony Brook is a better option
