As the parents of a student who attends Bay – Waveland Middle School, we have grave concerns about all students who attend this school. Recently, our son was wrongly accused of a disciplinary infraction. Our son has never been a problem in any way and is very well-regarded by his teachers as a smart, respectful young man. Following the district’s “Chain of Command” policy (a joke), my husband and I both sought out the school administrators and district level administration to discuss this issue.
The meeting with site administrators was unsettling. The principal admitted not seeing our son doing what he was accused of doing. The principal determined that our son was not lying but “may lie in the future”(fortune telling in school?). My child’s size was referenced (why?), and the administrator said our son “was in the wrong place at the wrong time”. My child was caught in a round-up of students. This administrator’s attitude was condescending, cold, and dictatorial. However, this same administrator, when interviewed by the school district superintendent, said he “saw” my child committing the infraction. Which story is this administrator planning to stick to?
As parents, we send our children to school to behave, learn, and interact respectfully with others; however, it is evident that the administrators at BWMS don’t believe that these skills apply to them when dealing with students or their parents. It is our job to be the voice, the advocate for our children. We should listen to them when they tell us about what goes on at their school. Students at BWMS are not heard or respected by the administration. Parents need to assess negative, critical school environments that our students are subjected to on a daily basis. Such is the situation at Bay-Waveland Middle School. The atmosphere is unfriendly and unwelcoming to any person who enters its doors.
We have nothing but respect for the teachers who go to work at BWMS everyday and have to work in this environment. I can only speak for myself when I say “THANK YOU!” for going to this school and teaching my child. I am sorry you don’t have a leadership team who cares.
As a side note, parents need to be careful when expressing their opinions about their child’s school administration, too. The district may involve the police who will be sent to watch your home.(Thank you. Our neighbors felt much safer.) As a taxpayer, I still wonder who made this harebrained decision… school level personnel, district level personnel, the school board and/or their attorney? What a waste of time and resources! The situation is really quite comical in a warped way. Since when are school issues the problem of the police force when violence is not involved? We have the right to question and comment on abuses and wrongdoings regarding our children.
Maybe if our superintendent was elected and had to answer to a tax-paying constituency instead of just an impotent school board, there would be changes made in the way Bay – Waveland Middle School principals are given carte blanche to run roughly over parents and their children. You work for us. Don’t discount us. It is time to hold our school district accountable for administrators who are out of control and making decisions to the detriment of our kids. Enough is enough.

I am currently going through something similar when my son was bullied on twitter which evolved into a fight at school and after the hearing he was sent to alternative school for the remainder of the year. He was in AP classes at bay high and an A B student with no prior issues and now he needs to attend remedial classes for the rest of the year.....way to go you so called "educators". I am just furious and have no idea where to go from here.

A friend of mine's child was jumped on a couple of years ago after a football practice. The video that was shown clearly showed this young man getting jumped on by a fellow teammate. The young man got the daylights beat out of him, right? He goes home, tells his mom, who in turns, calls the police. There was a report made. The young man went to the hospital to get his injuries checked out. Nothing was broken, just severe brusing of the eyes and limbs. The next day, he and the kid that jumped him BOTH got sent to alternative school, resulting in the injured child missing several senior functions that he was not allowed to attend. Social media lit up like firecrackers warning other students not to report anything if they get jumped on too, because regardless, the offender and the injured will both get punished. Anyways, this young man appealed to the school board, which was a joke. Of course, they sided with the principal's decision to send the injured young man to alternative school for 3 months. I feel for those who have to deal with this "school" administration, I really do.

I know what your saying the principals and vice principals at the BWMS and BHS or more worried about how well the students do on the MCT test then they are about the kids learning anything.Funding comes first learning is secondary. My child was involved in a minor infractions and was also sent to alternative school lost the right to go to school functions, play sports or any other activities. my child was being bullied all year long and they knew about because I was told me my child had a problem and was going to be taken of the team if it didn't stop.At first I told my child to turn the other cheek or go ask for help but when they asked for help from the school officials they were punished.we try to teach our children right from wrong and they still get in trouble. It make you say WHAT THE @*$& is going on. Please as a parent don't ever tell your child they have the right to stand up for themselves or to protect themselves that just make it worst. You know everyone screams about violence in schools but I can understand why it happens after seeing how these kids are treated. I myself had wanted to slap an official upside the head for the way they spoke to me and my child.

Central Office also sided with the administrator in our situation. In our case the adminisrator saw what he saw and that was it but in two seperate meetings with myself and husband he admitted that he didn't see our child involved in the incident. There is something wrong with this.

The entire school system is falling apart. BHS is nothing but a huge joke. Putting a child in Alternative school because he is failing a class he needs to graduate in a month instead of intensive tutoring?? Are you kidding me?? I was told by my child that there are over 60 kids in alternative school right now! Some for comments made on Twitter AFTER school hours. These comments are not threatening a child or teacher ... just name calling immature mean spirited comments. Does the new vice principal have nothing better to do than sit on Twitter day and night monitoring what these kids are saying? Does she have nothing better to do than sit at her desk watching classroom monitors for kids using their cell phones in class. This school has some real problems to deal with! I for one, am pulling my child out. I will not send my child to a school that cares more about what a bunch of silly teenagers are saying on a social network than what they are teaching them in the classroom. This school is a complete joke.

The Bay-Waveland School District is one of the top districts in the state. So before you start to make accusations, get your facts straight. Just because some parents have some problems, that doesn't mean the district is falling apart.
As far as the schools being all about testing, guess what? Aside from what you know, state testing is a reality. To say that the test is "being taught". That is a joke because no teacher gets to see the test.
Now, another thing. If you must know. Teachers are accountable, unfortunately not the parents that are complaining on here. If anyone ever says the schools are TEACHING THE TEST, they sure better be trying as close as they can figure out how to. Because guess what again? The MCT2 test is the curriculum that should be taught, mandated by the state!!
Usually, the majority of parents that complain are the parents that think their child DOES NO WRONG!!

I see you must not spend much time at our schools. We do have a great district and good schools. And yes they do teach the test and see what is on it.This forum is about how our kids are not being treated fair. When a growup out right lies and admits it and you can not get it fixed.Becuase she BACKS her people is sad.I am sure my kid does something wrong,But when he right you have to make it right. Not say "I SAW WHAT I SAW AND THAT IS IT" It was not what he saw.

Many teachers have told me they hate teaching because so much time and effort is focused on the state testings! So get your facts straight because it comes straight from the teachers themselves! My kids are on honor roll and have not been in real trouble. Aside from a couple phone infractions. The students hate Bay High since Mrs Coyne left and Dr Parker doesn't seem all too happy to be there anymore either. Things are falling apart.
