Miss. cities look to improve pedestrian safety

The Sun Herald reports Pascagoula and Gautier recently applied for $250,000 grants for the Mississippi Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School Program, which would fund new signs, school-zone flashers, crosswalk re-striping and sidewalk construction.

The problem is that with the decline in the economy many people can't even afford cheap crappy cars -- or more importantly -- the insanely expensive car note payments & insurance payments necessary to "stay legal" while driving.

Another problem is that when this area developed -- it was developed around the car with walking/biking/etc as an after thought. That's why there is no mass transit here & what little there is with the CTA -- its slow as hell & unreliable. That's also why you see people walking in the dirt on the side of roads -- cities don't care so much about providing walkways for pedestrians -- they only seem to care about padding the budgets of police who then get ticket revenues for cities.

Other than that the politicians lay off non-police employees & prefer instead to pad their own wallets by taking the payroll for the fired employees & giving themselves a raise.
