Hello everyone! The TX Driver Responsibility Law is a very little known law that requires Texans to pay over $700.00 (if you pay upfront) for certain traffic violations and/or points.
I received a ticket four years ago for having no car insurance. I did the crime and paid the fine. I was released from all fines and fees from the TX DPS. However, the TX DRL gives the TX DPS the right to require over $700 MORE from me and suspend my Driver's License if I don't pay. TX DPS doesn't have to notify me and I can't seem to find the appeal process. This is a violation of our constitutional rights!

Now, I understand this is a public forum and I encourage everyone to voice their opinion. Without you, I can't improve the campaign. However, please respect EVERYONE on this board.

Thank You for your support and consideration, Mary Moody

So, I'm thinking it would have been better for you if the extra $700 had been included with the fines you paid up front, yes?

I guess you received a notice by mail from DPS asking for their money. Were you aware of this possibility when you paid your previous fines or was this a total surprise to you?

If you knew nothing about this law, and it wasn't mentioned at your hearing, I'd have to agree that that was not fair. However, as the old saw goes, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse", so pay your fine, keep your license, and demand that Judges, CLerks, etc. be responsible for advising folks that they will be responsible for an extra fine as well.

I think the state makes ENOUGH money off me without this.

True "Ignorance of the law is no excuse", but can you tell me how many NEW traffic enforcement laws are passed every year no one knows about...I can't..

When I made my last payment in April 2004, I did specifically ask if there were any further fines/penalties included with this ticket and they said No. The TX DRL was in effect for 6 months at that point.
The Surcharge was a complete shock and they did not notify me till December 2007 and wanted the money 5 days before Christmas. OUCH!
The TX DPS has admitted that they did not have the right software to notify everyone and over 100,000 drivers fell thru the cracks.
