Gibson Island is a private property?

It amazes me to see the socialistic views of the younger generation. If you want Goverment owned and run property....Europe and Russia are waiting for you.

I live down mountain road and I've never been to Gibson Island...probably never will. I respect their ability to live in a place that's gated. They pay the money to live there, then let them have it. I also used to live in Drum Point just outside of the Chesapeake Ranch Club gates. Difference is the the Ranch Club was trying to keep the bad people out when most of the bad people lived inside of the Club. I understand Gibson Island being gated, but gating the Ranch Club was just silly. Gibson Island is very high income folks, when the Ranch Club was/is lower to middle class, lots of rentals and only maybe 5 percent of the area is actually upper class. Who really cares anyhow?

Gibson Island is actually full of the middle class and although the island is expensive now a few decades ago the island was alot more reasonable to live on but it really doesn't matter

I went there once about 20 years ago for the weekend I was a guest (friend of friend). It does have a unique landscape wiht cliffs and nice little beach. I would love to go again but I don't know the same people anymore.
If anyone knew the one day a year that you can visit pass it on.

all the asshats that live pass lake shore drive love to tell people they live on Gibson Island..

You have to fight your way through all the abandon cars and broke down boats to get there.

The gay drunken guard is to keep the hillbillies out.

The Island is private and I believe County Road maintenance ends at the gate house. They do not have to let you on to use the Post Office because there is one less then 10 minutes away. I have been on and off the Island all my life and it is improving compared to the homes that were falling apart twenty years ago. There is a resturant, hotel, post office, tennis courts, pool, golf course, ponds, beaches and the Mountain Bar-great place. Oh by the way they do have there own maintenance people and police officer that live on the Island.

About the Real Estate comment earlier as a way to see the Island, the cheapest home on the Island right now in 1.8 Million and if you want to see that one you better qualify, plus you'll have to deal with the Local Agent first Barbara Ann Watson to even get a appointment. One more thing the Gibson Island school is located just before the Gate House so seeing the Island that way is out.

Privately owned. I live in the Chesapeake Ranch estates. We also own our Roads and as thus pay for upkeep of them. America allows the ownership of property.

Is there anybody that lives on the island that can tell us what day (if any) the island is open? I would love to viset there. I've been on the beach by boat but would love to view it by car.

If you would like to see the island address a post card to yourself stop at the gate and tell the guard you are going to the post office to drop off mail. It is illegal for anyone to deny public access to a U.S. post office. Having a post office on a private island is a great perk and they are not going to take a chance on losing it by denying you access. I have done this a couple times over the past twenty years and drove the loop around the island in the process.

Okay first of all, I grew up on the Island and I am still a member, and about 3/4th of what has been said is incorrect. Most island people are not "snooty" but just like anywhere else you go there are a select few who do not represent the Island well. There is in fact the Gibson Island Club which has separate cottage rooms where members of the Island without homes can come and stay. There is a post office and I doubt any of the gatemen will allow you access to the post office even if you ask because it's nothing but a community place where you pick up your mail or you drop your mail in one of the blue mail slot boxes outside (There are a million off the island?! Just go to one of those instead of making up excuses, seriously). As for the "secret day" when anyone can get on the island, it's not a secret? On the Fourth of July employee's of the Club are allowed to invite a certain number of family members or friends down to the Point to watch the fireworks. As for the first person that started this thread the Island is privately owned by those who have houses and are members, therefore the gateman and policemen that aren't allowing you access are simply doing there job by keeping random people off of privately owned property. Like someone else said, the view isn't even all that great. You can see the Magothy River and Dobbins Island to one side and the Chesapeake Bay and the Bay Bridge on the other. Nothing worth making a big deal about to try to get on the Island. Although the gate is more so for safety reasons, how would you feel if you paid a decent amount of money to keep your community facilities, yard, and home looking nice and random people were allowed to tromp all over it and use them? Just something to think about. Let me know if there are any more things I can clear up about this topic.

And yes the Davis family does still live on Gibson Island, Patty Davis is Randy Davis' wife. I believe they are divorced though, if not then they are definitely separated.

I have no problem with private communities as long as there are no public roads within them. Star Island in Miami has a gatehouse and gives the impression you cannot go on the island unless you have business or live there, but the public has a right to go there because it has a pulic street running through it. You can just go to the gatehouse and ask to drive through to look around and they will let you, they take down your tag number and tell you not to get out of the car ...but you can get a look at the homes of really rich!!! not just GI rich...

Just inform the person in the gaurd shack that you are going to the post office and stay as long as you like. I have been on the island you are not missing anything. A mix of homes, most of them small and of need of repair. Yes some of the people are snooty. But some are ok as well. Check the church out! Probly the only thing worth seeing.
