I read a editorial today, February 23rd, about Motorcycles with loud pipes and how the writer felt that loud pipes were not a safety factor (Chopper Noise, Tom Armstrong, Pasadena) and I felt I need to voice my opion.

Mr. Armstrong, I own 2 Harley Davidson motorcycles and YES I have loud pipes and YES I believe that these LOUD pipes are a SAFETY factor and help other drivers in VEHICLES hear me when I am around them. And they may annoy you, but, I have too many people in CARS pull out in front of me with LOUD exhaust, talking on their CELL PHONES, listening to their RADIOS turned up all the way, READING newspapers,, TALKING to their passangers and not paying any attention to what is around them, PULL out in front of me and CUT me off. While you are in VEHICLES, you are surrounded by 3,700lbs of metal and while it is my choice, when I amb on my motorcylce, I may have 1,000lbs and I am not surrounded by it as you are. I feel like with my LOUD pipes, it gives me a better chance even though YOU are not paying attention to the road or your surroundings.

When we bought our 2nd bike, it didn't have pipes and we bought after market pipes 2 years later so that other drivers could hear us, because they couldn't, or didn't because of other distractions that they had. My LOUD pipes are no worse then the cars with mufflers that sound like lawn movers or the trucks with stack pipes coming out of the beds. Nor are they any louder than supped up mufflers on cars or trucks that are on the roads daily or cars and trucks with loud stereo systems.

I live on the Magothy River. I have to listen to boats out on the river every day and every night with loud mufflers all hours. This noise goes on all night, people going to dobbins and flying up the Magothy River all hours.

I have to listen to neighbors with wood chippers and lawn mowers all day and sometimes into the nights in my neighborhood on the weekends and week days.

I know that the noise that somebody has to listen to on the road for 5 minutes is nothing compared to what I have to listen to daily and nightly at my house on a constant basis.

If you don't like my LOUD pipes, turn your radio up. I feel like they are a SAFETY for me and they are nothing compared to the other things and distractions that we deal with on a daily basis while driving. This is a free country...get a life.

Typical harley rider: over 40, overweight, and undereducated. Needs the loud pipes to say look at me, but we really don't want to look at a clown in a mid life crisis.
