Maybe one day someone will clean up all the corruption and waste performed by public servants. From what I hear, paid firemen have extra time to set themselves up with another job. In addition, when they get close to retirement, they put in lots of overtime to raise their base retirement pay. Also, whether paid or volunteer, the whole network is political. I say privatize.

Roger,

Paid firemen work different schedules. Some work 2 10hourdays, followed by 2 14hour nights, then off for 4 days. Some work 24 hours on and then off for 48 or 72 hours. WHAT THEY DO ON THEIR TIME OFF IS UP TO THEM. If they want another job to earn extra money, it is their time.

As for the retirement, you are right, they probably do. I know my wife is currently a PT registered nurse. Her plan is to retire in 6 years, so she is going to go BACK to FT for the last 2 years to boost her pay. OH WELL

How much of their "time at work" is hanging around, cooking meals, etc? A lot of public servants, especially Federal, can not do whatever job they want on their own time since it can pose a conflict of interest.
