I just want to say, and I know people in Thayer are keeping so hushed up about this whole situation. I do not feel Laura was in this whole money scamming by herself. I think she is a fall guy for other people who had access to funds, just like she did, and these people are now living better because of these funds. I have no proof, this is just my thoughts and this hit me as soon as I heard the news last year she was accused of embezzeling. I just hope if what I think is true, that someone will come forward.

Nun, You are a angel. Even though Laura pleaded guilty does not mean she was not the fall guy for several other people. I also do not think there has been a trustworthy person in Thayer City Office since Mary Turner was mayor, city clerk or Mayor of Thayer, or otherwise.

You mean to tell me that a town has not had an audit in 11 years? How the hell is that even possible,or legal in its own right? the paper said town is almost broke and has to raise taxes?
if you didnt preform muncipal audit good gravy, i smell a rat... rarely can 1 person have that much control or fool budgets, mayors, department heads, the state (arent fishing license's numbered?) and then the feds on top of it all. How can one person cash a municipal bond without a counter signature? Clerk, ok? where the hell would be the county/city treasurer be in this, how is it possible to miss that? Either the clerk is a fn genius or the town collectively is beyond stupid???
Where is the mayor in this, or several mayors if 11years? I wonder if they keep diggin or if they find more rats?

what about Tom Cook from Jumpstart market he collected over $509,000.00 in sales tax and did not pay it then took everything out of the store and closed it.This should be a big crime.

Thayer is a po drunk town where 95 percent of all the people are related one way or another, by marriage or blood. My daughter had a friend who moved to the area from California and he wanted to play baseball for something to do in his spare time. He went to a baseball game, when the Thayer Mens team was there and was told He COULD NOT play on the team unless you were a family member of certain families. This is the same group of people who was wanting new people to move to the Thayer area back in 2003-2005 in a effort to save the Thayer High School. However, the High School being closed and Thayer High School students being able to become Cherryvale High School students is the best thing to happen to Thayer in along time. Broke up those genetic circles that Thayer High was all about. You was a outcast unless you belonged in certain families, which the Men's baseball team was all about, also. "Relation" is one factor that kept this city clerk thing hushed up.

So I read the article that came out in the Wichita paper November 4th, that a member of the city council had to go door to door in Thayer with a letter to get people to sign to request a audit in 2011, and was met with unfriendly folks, some that just did not want a audit done. Yet in 2010, when the city had voted yes for Sunday beer sales, a Thayer citizen, who's family member was just busted for being a meth cooker and seller, proclaimed it was against the "Sabbath Day" and went around town to get signatures of people who were against beer sales on Sunday. The city then had to have a special voting session to include all city residents to vote, which supposely cost the city $8000.00. 500 people, 500 pieces of paper printed up for them to vote yes or no for Sunday beer sales, somehow that and the time it takes to tally the votes does not add up to $8000.00. Needless to say, Sunday beer sales inside Thayer city limits were voted out. There would of been more sales tax Thayer could of used, instead of the same people driving to Galesburg to get their beer. How about a vote against Sunday meth sales inside Thayer city limits!!!

Despite what you think about Thayer and its residents, what Laura Whittley did was WRONG and she knew it. It doesn't matter who else may have been involved. She is guilty of what she did. She and her family can boo-hoo all they want, but she is still guilty. Inbred or not, wrong is wrong.

For people who don't live here, you all are terribly opinionated and insulting about this small town. There is no inbreeding that I am aware of and the people here have better grammar than most of you who have written posts here. So much for your theories about our intelligence! I like it here so much that I moved back here after being gone many years. It's a quiet, laid back town with a low crime rate. My kind of town. For those of you who don't like Thayer, maybe you should ask yourself why instead of making up lies about inbreeding. It must be embarrassing for those of you who have believed that all of your lives.

Not only belonging to certain families, also a certain Church is a factor in the town!

Still...people without a clue making comments about things they know nothing about! Yes, I do live here. We used to make the paper for sports, but Erie screwed us out of our High School so they could have a brand new one all to themselves and force our kids to attend. We happily declined. As far as our tradition of Watermelon Queen...why not? I guessing you haven't won any popularity contests!! All I can say is..you big city folk sure do run your mouths an awful lot. More gossip and bad mouthing on this forum than in this entire town.

Erie did not take away your high school. Your high school was too small. You could not offer the students what they were going to need in a changing society. It was costing the tax payers an arm and a leg to keep three high schools open. Now you are probably going to write the taxes are high with the new high school. I do own land in this county where I live within the boundaries of the Erie school district and my taxes have not increased very much. I do not grumble abou the small increases because it is going to educate.

As far as sports goes and Thayer being in the paper, who cares! Thayer's crowning moment was winning one state trophy. Some people in that town has allowed that to be their one shining moment. Wasn't there a board with pictures and newspaper article on the wall in the school until 2004 or so when a principal had it taken down?
It is time to move on and stop complaining about how Erie took your school. The way things are going more schools in this state will probably have to combine.
