I actually think driving during winter in NJ is actually safer. The reason is that the majority of motorists tend to slow down which is a miracle in the state of New Jersey.
First of all it always makes sense to avoid if possible driving during snow and ice. Whether driving on snow or ice if one use common sense, it could be done safely. If you try to do 90 MPH there's a good chance that you'll end up in some mishap. Drive slower, start gradually, gradually apply breaks when stopping; don't do 50 mph up to a light and then slam on the breaks and expect to stop on the dime. Lastly leave plenty of room between you and the car a head of you.
There's no reason why anyone should have an accident during bad weather, if we just use common sense.

It's interesting to note that last week on early Wednesday morning 12:30 AM during the ice storm, I drove to work a ten mile trip, from Parsippany to Rockaway NJ. I was able to do so safely and most of the other motorist was driving safely as well. My speed was around 45 MPH on Route 80. You just have to battle that anxiousness, over-confidence that tendency to go faster, to push the envelope; don't do it. Of course there were some motorists found it hard to suppress that Jerseyitis which resulted in spin outs and mayhem. But for the most part, I found it pretty safe as long as I was careful.
