Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

How much is a cup of coffee at Starbucks? For a jewelry salesman from Kansas, it ended up costing about $300,000. Police say the man stopped for coffee Monday at a Starbucks in Parker, Colo., south of Denver.

No doubt.I would have had the goods locked in my trunk and my heater in a shoulder holster.

The article is not very well-written (surprise!) but I am going to assume that the "tubs" of jewelry were in his trunk rather than on his person since the article indicates he was returning to his vehicle. I can't imagine that he was actually carrying "tubs" of jewelry around with him.

Your point about the weapon is well-taken. What good would it do him in his briefcase? I believe that CO issues CCW permits and that, given he had a handgun close at hand, he likely had a license to carry. Why in the world would he leave it in a briefcase?! He was not entering an establishment where a concealed weapon is prohibited. All he accomplished with that brilliant maneuver was to provide an additional weapon to a criminal instead of being able to very probably prevent himself from being robbed in the first place. In most cases, all it takes is the sight (or even a hint/outline) of a weapon on an intended victim to make a thief decide to go away.

Now, I'm sorry as heck that this happened to him and I'm glad he was not hurt, but geesh...it didn't have to happen at all if he had used the tools available to him; namely his brain and gun. Before anyone calls me a gun nut, I am not advocating that he should have shot the robber. I'm saying the gun would have deterred the robber from even approaching the guy.

In my previous post, I said "I believe that CO issues CCW permits and that, given he had a handgun close at hand, he likely had a license to carry."

I just reread the article and noticed that he was from out of town. My argument still holds, however. If he had a CCW from Kansas, CO would recognize it if those states have reciprocity. I have not checked and I'm not going to take the time to do it now. My guess is in the affirmative.

On the other hand, if there is no reciprocity on the CCW in CO then this guy could have had a serious problem if he carried the weapon. If that was the case, then he would have been smart to just leave it at home.

Either way, dumb move buddy.

Ok, this is off topic, but I must compliment you on your fine writing. Why are you wasting it on Topix?

lol

Thank you, William. Could it be my feeble attempt to raise the bar, perhaps?:)

I never consider any writing a waste of time. Writing, for writing's sake and as a tool to share knowledge, is one of life's pure pleasures. But that's just me; I have often been told I think differently than many other people.:)
